I'd like a look up please for the following HOUSTON family in Paisley, Renfrew in 1851 and in 1861. Thanks.

John b. abt 1819
Sarah N b. 1822 Paisley
Mary b. 1844
William b. 1846
John b. 1849
-------------------
Thomas b. May 1851
Jessie b. 1854
Matthew b. 1860
Isabella G b. 1864

Sarah Nicol b. 14 Jul 1822 is the second child of Thomas ANGEL and Mary CLARK. Sarah's older brother Thomas also married a Mary and one of their children was named Stephen Gifford. Yes, the G in Isabella's middle name is Gifford.
I wonder if we can find where it came from?? The ANGEL side or the CLARK side?

Regards,

Dave

Hello gedcom,

Thank you very much for the look ups. According to the fiche of the parish register FR1117 it is Jessie b. 4 Jan 1854.

No doubt it is the family in both years. I have no marriages for any of the children and no deaths for any of them yet. So I'm hoping the census can help give me a 10-year period in which to look.

Please see who you can find of the family in 1871.

Thanks.

Dave

Hi Dave - Jessie's back! I can only see the transcript not the original image so Jessie could have been mistranscribed on the earlier census.

1871 Scotland Census

Paisley High Church, 29 High Street

John Houston 52 Spirit Merchant
Sarah Houston 51
Mary Houston 26 Servant
William Houston 24 Foreman Best Marker
John Houston 22 Butcher
Thomas Houston 20 Barber
Jessie Houston 18 Shop Keeper
Matthew Houston 13 Scholar
John Houston 3.......... Grandson

Wondering where Isabella is? - The only Isabella I can see at the moment, who is born Paisley circa 1864 is in Abbey Burgh with parents James and Janet on the 1871 census - or has your Isabella died?

Thanks gedcom, Lincoln Lad & crankypants,

I'm adding a lot to my tree. Re Jessie, I have seen Janet and Jessie interchanged on many census listings. I don't know about the deaths of any of the children. That's one use I make of the census listings. I will now search for a death for Mary to see if she was elsewhere in 1861 or not, and for Isabella.

John has gone from furniture broker to silk weaver to wine & spirit business. I don't know when John or Sarah died.

Regards,

Dave

Hello,

Please see if you can find the family in 1881. Thanks.

Now I have to look for a marriage of one of John's sons, probably John since we have a grandson John in 1871.

Regards.

Dave.

Hi Dave

Thought this article may amuse you.

Glasgow Herald (Glasgow, Scotland), Thursday, May 27, 1869; Issue 9173
PAISLEY
CONTRAVENTION OF LICENSE CERTIFICATE
- John Houston, spirit dealer, 29 High Street, was charged at the Police Court yesterday before, Bailie Masson, with having on Saturday. 15th inst., contravened the regulations of his license certificate by opening his house for the sale of liquor before eight o’clock morning. Houston pled not guilty for the purpose of bringing out the circumstances, which were rather peculiar. Houston, it appeared, received a special license till five o’clock on Saturday morning, but on Inspector Cockburn and Constable Wilson going past at quarter past six, they observed three men in their working habiliments being let out, and on going into the house they found the previous night’s company, to the number of 26, still there. Mr Houston pled that he could not get the parties to leave, but the plea was not considered valid, and he was fined the sum of p1 5s, with p1 7s 6d of expenses.

1881 Scotland census
Registration District: kelvin
Civil Parish: Glasgow St George
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 8 Mathieson Rd

John HOUSTON head b. abt. 1819 age 62 Shopman Spirit Trade Paisley, Renfrewshire

Hello crankypants,

  Thank you.

I would say it means spouse Sarah died between 1871 and 1881 probably even in 1874 when he sold the Inn. I'll check SP.

Please see if you can find John in 1891. Thanks.

Hello crankypants,

Curious but it has to be with maiden name ANGEL:

Sarah HOUSTON nee Angel death 1906 Dumbarton, Dunbarton

Please see if you can find her 1881 onwards. In case it helps her middle name is Nicol.

Thanks.

Hi Dave

As you have her death in 1906 I checked the remaining census, not having much luck with her though.

No Sarah HOUSTON IN 1881,1901
No Sarah ANGEL in 1881,1891,1901

This is the closest one I could find in 1891 Scotland census

Registration District: Row
Civil Parish: Row
Town: Helensburgh
County: Dumbartonshire
Address: 17 Maitland Str

Sarah HOUSTON head b. abt. 1825 age 66 House Keeper Paisley, Renfrewshire

Not sure if this is her, I searched by address only and there is a Frank HOUSTON b. 1856 Ireland, Boarder. In total 15 names at this address.

This may be her
1881 census
Registration District: Paisley
Civil Parish: Paisley High Church
Town: Renfrewshire
County: Dumbartonshire
Address: 88 George St Wood Sheet

transcribed as
Sarar HOUSTON head b. abt. 1823 age 58 Yarn Winder Paisley, Renfrewshire

cheers

Hello crankypants,

Thanks for looking. That one is close and possibly her. She was born on 14 Jul 1822 Paisley, Renfrew.

Re John HOUSTON b. abt 1820 Paisley I have these two deaths:

1886 age 70 Gorbals
1887 age 63 Govan

so nothing conclusive.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. That is her in 1881 for sure. In 1861 she was listed as a yarn winder.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

With this census listing I have a new puzzle:

1871
Paisley High Church, 29 High Street
John Houston 52 Spirit Merchant
Sarah Houston 51
Mary Houston 26 Servant
William Houston 24 Foreman Best Marker
John Houston 22 Butcher
Thomas Houston 20 Barber
Jessie Houston 18 Shop Keeper
Matthew Houston 13 Scholar
John Houston 3.......... Grandson

... the grandson.

I wonder if any of the children are living at the same address in 1881 - silly question - that was the Inn redf)

Please see if you can find any of the children in 1881.

Thanks.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. It looks like you have found two of the sons. No John aged 13. He may have died. I will try to check that.

Dave
