how can i find the regiment my grandfather was in i have no info on his war time exp other than the fact that he fought in the first world war thankyou for any help RR

Hi my grandfathers name was Robert Henry Wilkinson born 5th july 1889 portrack villa`s Stockton on Tees he would have been 25 aprox at the onset of war i understand lots of records were destroyed in the blitz of the second world war nothing re medal index as far as i know so its a brick wall for me, he did survive the war if he went ? looking like he may not have thankyou for any help you caqn give...RR

What was his occupation,,,he may have been in a reserved occupation,,so he didnt have to serve,,,miner,,railways etc?

He was fireman on the railways stockton on Tees is there a way i can check using that theory? thanks for the info
