How do I indentify regiment?

My Paternal great grand father fought in WW1. I have his medals and I cherish them. On the box they came in, the original packaging, it states 'York.R'. I'm assuming this is Yorkshire regiment, but which one?

Is there a way of determining which one he was in?

Thanks!

Looked on there, found his medal card.

States he was 'Yorks.Regiment (number)38518'

Then 'Labour Corps (number)381848'

Just says Yorks, no hint at which Yorks, as there were a few of them.

God this is proving tricky! Spent good few hours online searching, just seem to be going round in circles!

Grrr!

Hi Mytson,

Have a look at this site "Research Notes"

Scroll down to the paragraph starting with Your relatives is likely to have got at least the standard medal set from WW1, then read on. The only thing is you would need to go down to Kew.

Thank you!

His name was Edward Weall. He fought in WW1.

Reg no. 38518 Yorks regiment.

Then, Reg no. 381848 Labour Corp.

Thats about all we know.

I have found his medal record file on Ancestry.co.uk, but literally nothing else!

Any help is greatly welcomed, thanks again!
