How do you find someone in a poor house

Hello. I have a relative who was in a poor house but I've no idea how to go about searching for this as I've never had to before. Can anyone help put me in the right direction. Is there a search engine etc.

Do you know what town the poorhouse was .Main Library of the County should have records ,or if it was a large town the local Library or Local Family History may have it.
