Introducing my relation Emily Nutt/Parker/Gray/Rich/Hammett

This saga is longer than War and Peace - and a virtual pint to anyone who can follow this.......

Emily RITCH (born 1874 Northampton) marries George Henry Parker in Q3 1890Northampton.

I have a birth certificate for one of their daughters - Dora Parker born 8th January 1893, Mother is Emily PARKER formerly RICH.

George Henry Parker dies.

Emily PARKER, widow, marries Arthur Nutt in 1895. Emily's father given as WILLIAM HENRY HAMMETT, Occupation Shoe Laster.

I have a birth certificate for Arthur and Emily's daughter Agnes, Mother is Emily NUTT Late PARKER formerly RICH.

Still with me - it gets worse.......

No birth record for a Emily RITCH/VARIANT that I can find but there is a birth registration for an Emily HAMMETT, 1874 Q2 Northampton 3b 83

I presume this census below could be Emily with Father William Henry.

1881 census for 11 Brier Court, Northampton

Wm.H. Hammett 37 born Middlesex, Finsbury.
Sarah J. Hammett 29 born Sussex, Southwick
Francis E. Hammett 11
Harry Hammett 9
.........Emily L. Hammett 7
Agnes E. Hammett 5
Wm. Hammett 2
Sidney Hammett
Class: RG11; Piece: 1544; Folio: 48; Page: 16

By 1891 Emily RITCH? has married George Henry Parker. No George Henry Parker and Emily on census but....

1891

91 Overstone Road, Northamptonshire
George H GRAY 57 Head
Emily GRAY 17 (alias RICH/HAMMETT/PARKER Eventually NUTT)
Agnes RICH 15 Sister in Law
Class: RG12; Piece: 1198; Folio 135; Page 8

Can anyone make sense of this - I cannot seem to find the origins of William Henry Hammett, when did he marry? Why did Emily use the name Rich? why did the Parkers use the name Gray? Who and where did George Parker/Gray come from....

Any help or comments appreciated.

Hi Gedcom,

Could it be that her mother Sarah was a Rich. On the 1861 census there is a Sarah Jane Rich born abt 1852 Southwick Sussex, parents William and Eliza.

Thank you Julie, they look very promising. I will follow up those census

I have also just ordered the birth certificate for Emily Hammett (1874) to see if Mother is a Rich. I am beginning to think perhaps William Henry and Sarah J never married.

Thank you for looking. I will let you know what it says on the birth certificate.

Gedcom.

I have made some headway following the census returns, also made a start on following George Henry Parker/Gray. I think this family will take up a bit of my time to unravel.

Thank you Marie, I have been researching for about 17 years now but this is the first individual who has had so many surnames/name changes that I have come across in my tree.

The daughter of Emily and Arthur Nutt - Agnes Nutt married my grandfather and I keep hoping to find living descendants who may have a photograph of him as I have never seen his likeness.

In the meantime her family are keeping me well and truly on my toes...

Just adding an update - the birth certificate of Emily Hammett did indeed say Mother's Maiden Name was Rich. Father was Harry Hammett.

On Emily's marriage to George Henry Parker (she used the surname Ri(t)ch) she left her father's name blank. George Henry Parker was 55 years old and she was 16.

I cannot find a marriage for a Sarah J Rich and a Hammett - beginning to think they did not marry.
