I have been happily finding birth details and marriage details for my ancestors. But i wonder how you find death details i.e. if you have no clue when and where they died. Is there a place to search obituaries online? Or how do you trace family death dates certificates and alike?

Hi Joe,

do you mean 'recent' deaths? or ANY deaths?

When looking for a death, I have an idea of which area is most likely through the census.

If it more recent, then information from their marriage certificates can help in pinpointing an area. (or even a marriage ref in some cases).

alot of this is guesswork, and probables, if it is a woman and she has married at 21, then, you would generally look for birth in the first 20 years after marriage, once child baring has ended, then possibly begin 'trawling' for a death after this date,

you could try http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

for a death, (but this isnt complete by any means.)

you could also try local papers for obits.

Hope this helps

:)

Thanks for the advice :) I was thinking of Deaths recent and old

I have not many problems finding birth and marriage details but didnt have a clue on how to go about deaths.

I have noticed you can search obituaries on Ancestory but not sure how complete it is.

on ancestry you can search deaths in 3 different categories,
1 - Complete BMD Index ranges & Images 1837-1983 basically its 1920 to 1983
2 - Partial FreeBMD Indexes & Images 1837-1983 - deaths from between 1837 and around 1920,
3 - Complete BMD Indexes 1984-2005 - basically between 1984 and 2005

i have ancestry, if you want me to search a death i wil try i cant guarantee i can find it as you will appreciate theres a lot:) . if you want me to look just pass the details

Yes i am a member on ancestory and yes i know about the search options on there, i have used them many times. What i was asking was can you search obituaries on there and how complete are they. :)

I am trying to find when some members of my family died but i dont know where, when, and what age. I was just trying to find out which is the best way to find out when they died, what methods people use. :)

is ok, its me being a thickit...lol

did you mean this joe?

Death, Burial, Cemetery & Obituaries

how to search or if anyone has searched it with any success?

I 'think' that it only is available IF there has been any records transcribed/filmed for that name. So all in all probably no, there isnt any easy way of knowing really who died when.

is just a matter of making a few calculations and seeing if they tally really.

You could also try..

http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/

this is a PPV site, and can help sometimes.

there is also the National Burial Index, (NBI) which isnt complete but has alot of burials to help narrow things down abit.

http://www.ffhs.org.uk/projects/nbi/nbi-overview.php

it is expensive to buy, about £40

BUT I have found it to be most helpful, and I have found children that have been born/died inbetween census, that I wouldnt normally have found

Hello,

I am new! Been researching for about 6 years though.

How worthwhile are these obituaries web page? I logged on one which looked official but it was American and you have to pay.

Mum is called Doreen nee Yarwood. born 28th February,1929 ( I think-she is 80 next year) Her mum was Florence and dad, Jack. She lived in Bucknall area of stoke on trent.
Thank you.

Do you have a copy of your mums birth certificate? this will give you her mums name and maiden name which will enable a search to see if there was a twin, (this also depends as well whether the twin drew breath) IF the twin never had a breath, it would be classed as stillborn. BUT if it had one breath, then it would be classed as a live birth.

Thank you so much for helping me.

Yes, have mum,s certificate but no mention of another child. Nana was called Florence Kidd, married name Yarwood.
Hmm

Right, well, I have found your mums birth ref and it was registered under Cheadale area. There wasnt any other births reg'd at the same time with MMN Kidd, but this doesnt mean it wasnt a twin birth. It is possible that your gran was at a maternity unit, and sometimes when a still birth occurred they removed the child and placed it in a grave of someone else that was being buried, more often than not, someone unrelated.

Thank you once again. Phoned Mum, now 80. Saves me a lot of trouble by finally saying, did not want to tell you this but baby born at home and my mum was told that the other baby was dead when it was born and then put down the toilet!!!

End of search!!!!!

I have only just joined this forum but have been impressed by swift help. Thank you.

On another note, I have a real mystery involving the Lord of the Manor, great potters and this missing jigsaw piece that has got me beat. Have loads of good data but cannot find the link. Anyone up for a challenge!!?

Hiya,

flipping eck! that is so sad. (I think though if it were me, I would really want to check the local burial rec's just to see if the child was buried, sometimes you can get lucky) I know that your mum said that but even so, i'd be inclined to have a look, just to satisfy my curiosity.

re your other problem, all I can say is if you post up what you know in a new thread in this forum and we'll have a look and see if we can come up with some suggestions :)
