Extract from “Reids Flat on the Banks of the Lachlan” by Helen V Lloyd

John Howarth (1829-1897) was born at Parramatta to John (1779-1847) & Mary nee Saunders (1784-1858).
John Snr had been sentenced to life in the colony and arrived in 1817 on the “Maria” with a 7 year sentence.

John Jnr ventured into the country, and spent some time prospecting on Lambing Flat Gold Fields. He was gold mining at Tuena in 1862 prior to moving to the Reids Flat area where he pursued his trade as a blacksmith. John worked on the large stations with his blacksmiths forge working mainly on the “Dryburgh” and later in the Reids Flat village.
In 1850 he married Mary Clark at Enfield Sydney and they had 5 children. His second marriage was to Catherine Roberts at Goulburn in 1862.
John purchased land north of the village which he called “Rosevale” where he raised his large family.

May 1897
