How to make sense of this.

Death reg has father as John Hamilton but it seems is should be John Milhinch/Millhinch.

Death reg has mother as Susan Wilson so that should be her maiden name.

It would then seem that there should be a marriage before 1832 for a William Hamilton to a Susan Wilson.

And there should be a marriage for John Milhinch/Millhinch to Susan.

Why would Hugh change to using Hamilton between 1841 and 1851? The death of a parent?

Ok lets see if i have this right

Susan Wilson marries William Hamilton
Susan then marries a John Milhinch
Susan has Hugh and hence the Hamiltion name on Hugh's baptism.

What i dont understand is why would Hugh in 1841 be with her first husbands family the Hamilton's?? Well i assume its first hubby;s family
Does 1841 state the relationship of Hugh to the head of the family?

John Millhinch was probably the father hence the 1832 reg.

I would think that Susan probably never married John.

Shipping record has Hugh's father as William.

Qld. death reg usually list mother's maiden name but in cases of two marriages I've seen death reg for different children where the mother's name is different. So we don't know yet if WILSON is Susan's maiden or married name.

The fact that Hugh is with a Hamilton family in 1841 suggests to me that he is probably a grandson.

So it's still not clear why Hugh changed his name since he had a birth reg with a father and mother named.

Without getting the image you can't tell if that date is a birth or baptism date or if the record has both dates on it. Unless an extracted record is on FS:

Name: Hugh Millhinch
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 25 Nov 1832
Christening Place: DALMELLINGTON,AYR,SCOTLAND
Birth Date: 12 Oct 1832
Father's Name: John Milhinch
Mother's Name: Susan Hamilton

Hi Dave,
Death for Susan Wilson nee Hamilton 1897 Parish of Muirkirk County of Ayr
Susan Wilson wife of William Wilson deceased died 2nd April age 84 - father Adam Hamilton and Mother Janet nee Craig, son Campbell Wilson was witness. (From a copy of Death cert on a Ancestry Tree)
Susan married William 29 Dec 1837 Dalmellington Ayr
John Milhinch b 1 April 1805 baptised 23 May 1805 Ayr to John and Jane Milhinch nee Johnson then a John Milhinch junior tried 10 Sept 1832 Dumfries – received 7 year sentence departed 6 May 1833 ship “Heroine” to NSW
Death in Adelaide SA for a John Milhinch age 73 at Yankalilla– has his father as James.
So a possible scenario for you – Susan meets John and result is Hugh born 1832 and then John is caught/charged (for what I can’t seem to find) and despatched to NSW, son Hugh is sent to live with Grandparents when Susan marries William Wilson and he finds out his father was a convict hence surname change between 1840/1850 – Hugh then sets off to find his father in Oz.
With all the names of John’s and William with Hamilton and Wilson - sort of fits….

regards
Val

Hello Val,

That's great. Thank you very much. :)

I'll have a look and see if I can find anything to add to that.

Regards,

Dave
