MCNEIL Jane Servnt U F 22 House Servant Argyllshire - Campbeltown

The only Hugh born abt 1833 in Kilmarnock who shows up in same family in 1841 and 1851.

I wonder how accurate the 'Susan Wilson' bit is. And it says 'only son of' John.

The 1861 census should rule that one out.

Just to complicate things a bit more. :2fun:

Hugh Montgomerie Hamilton (1854-1930), judge, was born on 26 June 1854 at Parramatta, New South Wales, son of Hugh Hamilton, a pastoralist from Ayrshire, Scotland, and his native-born wife Margaret Clunes, née Innes...
Full bio - HERE

Marriage - one is an error and one is a correction
V1853251 39C/1853 HAMILTON HUGH - INNES MARGARET C CB
V1853261 39C/1853 HAMILTON HUGH - INNES MARGARET C NU

Empire (Sydney, NSW : 1850 - 1875) Wednesday 31 August 1853 p 2 Family Notices
... MARRIED. On the 30th instant, at St. John's Church, Parramatta, by the Rev. H. Bobart, Hugh, youngest son of the late John Hamilton, Esq., of Sundrum, Ayrshire, to Margaret Clunes, youngest daughter of the late George Innes, Esquire.

I can't find this one in shipping records. I want his age on arrival because I can't find his death.

Youngest son so not the family I have in the census.

So we have 2x Hugh from Ayr in Australia, both with father = John.

The 'brother-on-law' bit does not help. It's not Hugh's sister.

Marriage 19 Dec 1861/B0189 Hamilton Hugh - Katherine McIvor

Marriage 1866/B1656 Crosser Edward - Anne McIvor

The one you have found on the census has a mother Margaret Paul just to further reject them. If she was Wilson I would have wondered and I can find no other on the census with a John tho there is one who is on his own from a young age.

Thanks Barbara.

Two of them both from Ayr both with father = John and neither seem to be in 1841 census.

I'm reasonably sure my Hugh arrived in 1857. Wish I could find the other one to get an age. Arrival has to be before 31 August 1853. There are lots of possible deaths in NSW for the Parramatta one.

The Sundrum bit has not helped either.

I can find no marriage for a Susan WILSON so I wonder about that bit.

Looks as though we are stuck.

Regards,

Dave

There is a Hugh Hamilton at Coylton (which is where Sundrum seems to be) but he was born 1774. Possibility of being John's father.

Thanks Barbara.

Yes, I was surprised how many there were in NSW.

Looks like a 2nd wife going by age.

I'll have to spend some time in TROVE and try to rule out some of those deaths. Pity that bio didn't mention the death of his father.

Think we are onto something as John is a landed proprietor at Sundrum which seems to have been Sundrum House or Castle at various times. Looks they are of the gentry and Hugh could have been sent away to school? I am having trouble finding them in the 41 at all but am at work so will look later.

Thanks Barbara.

Yes, I'd say there is a bit of class difference ;) between the Hugh in Parramatta with a bio of his son and my Hugh, the farmer in Dayboro, Queensland. Although my Hugh did get the location where he farmed named after him - at least for a few years. :2fun:

Hi Dave, I am new to this site (used Google and found it). The Hugh from Dayboro is also my Hugh. I am a direct descendent and would love to know where you fit in with the tree, especially because you share the same name as my brother. I don't know if you can private message me but I'd be very interested in finding out more. I've only used ancestry.com until this point.

Hello Rachael and welcome to the Forum.

PM becomes available after 3 posts.

Actually it's coincidence. Hugh is not related to my Hamilton branch. Mine come from Co Down in Northern Ireland.

I can't actually recall why I was searching. A McIvor connection to Dayboro possibly. Or Edward Crosser.

None of the three are in my tree now that I've made some corrections since 2012.

I have nothing more than what is in this topic so if you have specific queries then post them and one of our members will try to help you.

Dave
