Hi all,

Well am new to all this, ive got some time off university and need something to keep me occupied. Well here is what I have got, on my nans side I wish to do some research as it seems the most interesting. We have always had some knowledge of someone in the family comming from brazil but we don't know how far back it is. I know my great grandfathers name which is John Henry Thomas and he was born in 1899 (or so my nan says) he was in the millitery WWII I belive. I am hopefully waiting on some documents from my Nans brothers on my great gran father. We live in Liverpool, England and that is belived were my great granfather was born.

If anyone could give me advice on where I start as I have no idea! and I am really interested.

Regards,
John

I've checked the 1901 census and there are two John H Thomas born in Liverpool, one ABT 1898 and one ABT 1900.

The relationships I've copied from the census return and are relationship to the HEAD of the family.

Do you think either of these could be him?

How would I get maiden names etc? and another question where did you search for these results?

I got the information from ancestry.co.uk I have a subscription which give me access to all the UK census data.

To get maiden names you could search for marriages on freebmd.org.uk where they have transcribed a lot of Birth Death and Marriage records and are continually updating the database.

There are two ways you could get the mother's maiden name - find the birth record for John Henry and send for the certificate (available from the General Registry Office also called GRO - gro.gov.uk) or you could try and find the marriage record for John Henry's parents.

I'd suggest the better option is to get the birth certificate for John Henry because that will also confirm his father's name. A certificate will cost £7 but you will need to know the Volume Reference which you can find on FreeBMD.

I don't want to overload you with info so I'll stop here but if you need anything else post back!!

Hi taalia81,

Some real good advice and help you are giving me here. My family are really happy with the information you have given. If I had an account at ancestry.com would it therefore be possible to search each male in the family history as I would have there surname? is it worth me getting a months account.

You see, my goal is to find out which family member game from abroad, we suspect brasil or a african country but we really are not sure.

Ancestry do a 14 day free trial which is probably worth your while to see if you can find the info you're looking for and the 1881 census is free to look at, so I'd recommend using them before you decide whether to subscribe or not, saying that, I've found so much from ancestry.co.uk I think it's worth it.

The main thing is having details of relatives who were born before 1901 which is the most recent census available to search (they are under an 100 year privacy policy). For example your John Henry was a very good start point because he was born just before 1901 so that gave us his parents...

If you want to give me the details of the men you think may have been from another country, I'll have a quick look and see if there's anything obvious...

Glad I can be of help, I've had a lot of good help from some good people and wouldn't have got as far as I have without them so it's good to pass it on!

Hi,

Infact I am not sure which family member is from a differnt country however all we know is it is in my nans family (which isnt a big help lol) so I think I may try and digg some stuff up about John Henry Thomas parents, which you stated above are Edward & Elizabeth Thomas and see what happens.
