I was just wondering if anyone has found where a particular physical characteristic has come from. When researching my husbands family I was given old photos of his ancestors The first three generations all have fine heads of hair, the following generations all bald so its pretty obvious when the baldness gene came in.

One of the main characteristics that run through my family, is height.
And it seems as each generation that comes along, the height is increasing.

Generally my father and Uncles were just over 6ft. Myself and my brothers, about 3 inches taller on average.
Our sons are on average 2 inches taller than us.
My tallest nephew is 6ft 7ins, and the shortest is about 6ft 3ins.
The girls range between 6ft and 6ft 4ins.

So we can't get lost in a crowd, can we.

Heights a difficult one as generally all the population is getting taller due to better nutrition. With the baldness in my husbands case it came in when a Sarah Jarvis married a Richard Bullivant (he had a good head of hair even in old age) Think it probably came down the line from Sarahs mother as all the male descendants from her branch are bald too.

In our family (mothers side) it is height but also large hands and feet and a high forehead. One of my cousins hands are like bats and his feet are huge. Smallest female foot is size 9 and my 8 year old niece is already a size 3!!

On my side it is incredibly good looks...think it was the Italian window cleaner who gave me them.
I was talking to a landlord once who had a flat nose,he was boasting that it was all the rounds of sparring he did as a boxer when he was young..the irishman having a beer had to run for his life when he drunkedly said..ah be jesus what a lot of twaddle..ya daughters got a flatter nose than you!

I only had this conversaton with someone last night. A family member works in a shop and a customer come in and she thought he looked liked "family". she went around the counter and checked his ankles out  Yep he had the family ankles. It turned out he was a son to second cousin. No one was spared them ankles  Ok family ankles, no big deal, but you lined us all up and checked the ankles out you would know what i mean. Regardless of our shapes and sizes most of us were branded with the family ankle gene:2fun: :2fun:

Both sides of the male members of mine and my husbands family have bulbous noses but our children have been spared them thankfully. so that must be a recessive gene or they have simply cancelled each other out.

I've just had a vision of Gibbos family checking peoples ankles. Must have been a problem for them in Victorian times.

It's height with the Cooper's I don't think there's any one over 5ft 6 in the family ever. My son Pat has a slight lean to starboard in every photo we have of him forever telling him to stand up straight . when I found dad's family in Southampton and got photo's of a couple of gen's here's all these men 5ft 5 with a lean to starboard.

Tends to be that I favour the burgess line (mums side) in that I have the same face shape. There's only one thing that sets me aside from my immediate family, I'm the only one with green eyes.

Height runs in my family, I am one of the shortest male elliott's around, being only 6 foot tall (I'm 16, bear in mind). My father is the shortest of his 3 brothers, being only 6'1, with the tallest being 6'6.
Grandad Elliott is 6'1, and I believe his father to be have been over 6' also, with stories of his brother Samuel being a huge man.

Unfortunately, I've picked up my mums nose, which is upturned, and I have large-ish ears, from my dad :D

(My father started going bald at 20, let's hope I miss that out - though my hairline is already receeding rapidly! )

Good thread.

My husbands family Ancestors were quite short stocky people. His father was much taller than most of the family so maybe it was from his mothers side. Could have been wartime rations that helped as before then the family had struggled to get enough. My husband and his brothers are quite tall, he is 6ft 2 and is the shortest. His mother was quite tall but her family were quite short judging by photos and WW1 records. Its predicted that my youngest son will be 6ft 4 or more. So even my lack of stature hasn't had much impact. All my children tower above me and have done since they were about 12.
I can't recognize anyone by ankles but while researching one family branch wasn't sure if they were connected till I saw a photo, the build the way of standing the full head of hair in old age and especially the nose, he really couldn't be anyone else but a relative.
