Just found a cousin and looked at their research and found I've gone down the wrong branch of the family tree. Family legend says an ancestor was on the HMS Victory at Trafalgar. Try as I could I couldn't make the link. Ironically my cousin has found the link and didn't know it. I've been looking for William Barrow from Lewisham for 5 years but family notes on this were very patchy and I found I've been following the wrong branch. Now I have been able to prove that my husbands 4 x Grandfather was indeed on the Victory. Strange thing is my husband is underwhelmed. He just said wel "Our family history always said he was there." You'd think as a Science graduate he would understand about proof. After all his family legend also had another Ancestor as Scottish when it turns out it was his wife who was Scottish. I've lost count of the times that family legends were either untrue or inaccurate.

Hi duckweed

My grandmother said that her grandad was Irish. I dont know where she got that from but there is nothing of the sort. He was English through and through. In a way it is good as Irish research can be very tricky.

Sometimes you have to accept that what family members told you may be wrong.

I think it's a case of 'there's no smoke without fire', and I am really pleased you have found the link and got back on the right track.
