Hello Everyone
My name is Susanne and I am researching both sides of my family tree. I have quite a lot of information about my mother's English Methodist roots as her family history is fairly rooted in the Leicestershire area (Bott = Burton = Wood) but very little about my father's background history (Hill = McCafferty). The problem lies in the fact that both paternal grandparents were from Irish Catholic stock, who left Ireland to settle in Scotland & England. Family legend has it that great-grandfather Hill was in the British army (although I can't understand how a RC Emigrant ended up in the British Army? also Hill is not a typically Irish surname, so I'm wondering if the family had cause to change their name when they left Ireland?) but the records are proving tricky. If anyone can help, I'd be more than grateful!
