I have just discovered some Irish ancesters in my tree, who it seems, come over to England during the years of the Irish potato famine.

Is anyone able to tell me how I can find immigration details and any Irish records? I know a lot of Irish family records were destroyed by fire but I am hopeful.....:D

What information do you have? Do you know when they came to England? Maybe you could try searching the English census - sometimes it will give a town or city with the country of birth. Could give a starting point, anyway! Good luck!

Thanks!!!
I dont know a lot as yet. I am waiting for a marriage cert that hopefully will tell me where in Ireland this Gt gt grandmother (Sarah Hughes) was from and some info on her parents so I have more of a lead. As it stands, on the census's she just put 'Ireland' as place of birth. She married in Sheffield in 1857 (jan 1/4) and was born c1837.
I also think she arrived in Liverpool because her husband (Thomas Wall b.1832) had Sheffield as place of birth on all the census's except his last one, which had Liverpool for some reason. Did he leave a clue??
I have a feeling that she was about 13 when she travelled over but I cant confirm that the name I suspect is her until I find out her fathers name from the marriage cert (I hope!!!)
I just have to wait a week or so and see!
I am jumping the gun a bit and trying to find out how to go about finding how she got here and her place of origin in the emerald isle.
What do you think?

Hi Salamander,
if you can find out which county your ancestor came from it would make things easier for you, example, Leitrim, longford, cork etc, most of the main countys have a central record in the main cities. But as i found out a lot of records have been lost or destroyed in the past. If you find out the county let me know and i will see if I can help as I am in the republic of Ireland.
