ok so i have managed to find a copy of my partners grandmothers birth cert and the info given is as follows

joan elizabeth graham born 31st december 1930 moymore

father williiam john graham (moymore)

mother aletta gertrude graham formerly holthouzen

profession of father farmer

registered 20th january 1931

registered in the district of pomeroy
in the union of cookstown
in the country of tyrone


i now have this info and was hoping with this is would lead me to other info on her brothers of and sisters births that i have a estimate birth dates on but cannot even find her birth on line anywere could someone lead me in the right direction please thank you all for your time

yeah that would be my tree hun , i have connected to 2 other people researching the same but they have hit a brick wall the same as me ,getting really frustrated that i cant find either williams or aletta parents

i have tried every way possible i even subscribed to forces war records and also genes reunited but still got no were, i have no clue has to what his parents names were and as far as i know he left for south africa 1899, and as for the holtzhousen side again stand still have checked on familysearch in the hopes i would come up with something but all i have found is the info that you have gave me so i am at complete and utter stand still.

i think the holtzhousen side of things may be due to the spelling of the surname as i have found at least 3 different spellings on the 3 of the childrens births as 2 of them were born in england and the other is off my partners nans birth cert so i have no clue as to what to do next, i did find there marriage hoping the witness names would help but they didnt , and as she was only 17 when they married it just says by permission of step father but no name given, and as for the graham side i have nothing to go off unfortunately really dont want to give up on them but feel like i have no were else to go

Did the marriage cert not give his fathers name and occupation,,,,,where did they get married by the way ?

if this is Henrys birth,,,,then it looks likely that William was still in the army at that time,,,you could try and get his service records,,,they are held by the ministry of defence,,,it costs,,,and there is a very long wait to receive them {approximately 9-12 months},,,the records may contain the clue you need to crack this,,,but again,,they may not.just google service records after 1922 to find the details of how to order the record,,and what you need in order to be able to do so. Do you have his death cert?

roots Ireland has 3 records for a William John Graham b 1878-1888 in Tyrone,,,none of which are close to 1882/3

there are 2 civil birth records for 1880 and 1887 and a baptism in 1886 ?

they got married in south africa in 1907 , found it online but didnt give any info apart from there names the date and witness names, and he did die in wolverhampton, as for the birthdate its kind of guess work as apparently he lied about is age to get into the army

Births, deaths and marriages in Northern Ireland from 1.1.1922 onwards are not on-line anywhere, which is probably why you can’t find anything. You need to contact GRONI in Belfast. They have the records, and can search for you (for a fee) or you can go in person and search. There’s a £14 charge for a days searching. See:

William was born about 1878. Not entirely sure when he went to South Africa but he was there in 1905 (which is when 1 KOYLI arrived) and married Aletta Gertruide Holtzhausen in 1907. My Nan, Aletta Ellen Graham was born in Wyneberg in Sep 1910.

Aletta Gertruide was born about 1890 in Christiana, Transvaal, South Africa. According to my mum she was the daughter of a minister in the Dutch Reformed church and that may explain some of the problems with the marriage documentation. I am going to order the marriage cert from the records office and will let you know if I gain anything from that.

William's WWI service records will not be available online since he remained in the army after 1920. I plan on writing to the historians office for the rifles (keeper of the KOYLI archives).

i have actually found quite a bit of info on the holtzhausen side of things , i contacted some one who specializes in south africa and they managed to find out a little info for me, i have added it to my tree on ancestry
