Hi.
Im Steve and ive just joined the forum to hopefully get sone sone help.

Im only researching one line of my tree because I have been told one of my ancestors came from Wales and used to work in the slate mines.

Ive got very close geographicaly but Ive hit a block with Edward Pugh.

He was married to Elizabeth in 1920 in Salford and lived in salford to his death in 1864. And he was a Tailor.

The 1851 census says he was born in worthen shropshire but the 1861 transcipt says monmouthshire. On looking at the document im certain that it says Montgoneryshire.

The area in hes from in Shropshire is very close the border with Montgonershire.

Ive found a couple of baptism records in that area that say his patents whete Thonas and Martha. I'm fairly sure these are the same person but im not %100. I cant find any more info about Thomas and Martha.

Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Steve Wailes formerly Pugh

Hello and welcome to the Forum.

Pob in 1861 looks like Prelyston Montgomeryshire but so far can't find Prelyston ? It starts with 'P' as in Packing Case ... ?

Why Thomas & Martha?

Possible just west of Worthen

Trelystan is a remote parish and township on the border of the historic county of Montgomeryshire with Shropshire. Trelystan now forms part of the community of Forden, Leighton and Trelystan in Powys. St Mary’s Church, Trelystan is sited 900 feet up at the S end of the Long Mountain to the east of Welshpool.

Hi.

Thanks for replying.

I cant find Prelyston either so Trelyston looks like a good lead to follow. Maybe the person who wrote the census record misheard and wrote it as Prelyston.

The only baptism records i can find for montgomershire or the part of shropshire near worthen and the right dates are shown in attached images.

Also there are a few other trees on acestry that have these records as Edwards.

Im not certain at all that theses are the same Edward. But its my best guess so far.

Ive not found out if Edward moved to manchester with his parents then got married or moved there to get married?

I'll do some digging with the Trelyston lead and see what turns up. Its close enough to worthen to be a real possabilty.

Thanks very much for your input.

Baptisms are not birth dates. Baptisms can occur the same years as the birth, or for anytime after. Sometimes there are group baptisms for a many children.
My Gt Gt Aunty, was baptised at the age of 21, the week before her marriage. I've also had 6 children baptised on the same day, with a spread of ages, from 3 months old to 9 years old.

Census entries for their ages are rarely correct, and are rounded up or down, sometimes by 5 years or so.
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like one.......you have possibly got the right one.

I think Ancestry do a a 2 week FREE trial. Have a look and see. If you sign up for the FREE trial, you'll need a credit card. Before the 2 week trial ends, you cancel it.......or keep it going. If you don't cancel, it will automatically sign you up., for whatever plan you've chosen.

I'm not sure if FMP, do a free trial. But if you think their coverage is better, with ORIGINAL documents to view, then go for it. Transcripts rarely give you all the information required.

Ancestry do a trial. Ive git days left. But that record doesnt turn up on there. So might cancel that and do a month on fmp.

Just the baptism.

It gives a 10 month window to match up with 1851 abd 61 census's.

Ie. He could have been born any time after april 1st to mstch with date on 1851 census or April for 1861 census.

It looks convincing

I was looking into that. But ive found this lad
last t night.

First name(s) Thomas
Last name Pugh
Marriage year 1787
Marriage date 14 May 1787
Marriage place Trelystan (Chirbury), County of Powys
Denomination Anglican
Spouse's first name(s) Margaret
Spouse's last name Davies
County Shropshire
Register date range 1776-1796
Archive reference P283/A/1/3
Page 35
Register type Composite
Record set Shropshire Marriages
Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records
Subcategory Parish Marriages
Collections from Great Britain, England

Its the same chapelry so do i go with this because theyre both possible?

Im trying to find anything that will tie edward to either couple.

So far ive got this

First name(s) Richard
Last name Pugh
Birth year -Baptism year 1803
Baptism date 18 Sep 1803
Denomination Anglican
Place Trelystan (Chirbury), County of Powys
Father's first name(s) Thomas
Mother's first name(s) Margaret
Mother's last name -

Maybe Edwards brother?

If I cant find any evidence to link Edward with either couple, do i go with the most likely or concede defeat???

The Cowdall Link is less likely, BUT that thomas has links to Festiniog which is slap bang in slate mine territory. And its abouth the right nth grandad who ive been told worked in North Wales Slate Mines.

Any thoughts welcome?

Bit of a problem. Can't tell at the moment re Richard which Margaret is his mother.

Or, we only have one Margaret who married twice.

Have to continue searching.

Margaret Davies is such a common name in that area.
