I'm looking for the deaths of Jacob and spouse Mary and son John BARRACLOUGH / BARROWCLOUGH

Name : John BARROWCLOUGH
Birth : 21 Jan 1833
Christening : 22 Sep 1833 Queens St Wesleyan, HUDDERSFIELD
Father : Jacob BARROWCLOUGH
Mother : Mary ARMITAGE

Jacob BARRACLOUGH b. abt 1810 KIRKBURTON
Mary ARMITAGE b. abt 1812 ALMONDBURY

Name : Jacob BARRACLOUGH
Spouse : Mary ARMITAGE
Marriage : 4 Jun 1832 KIRKHEATON

I thought the middle name of Armitage may have originated with this marriage but the following two complicate things:

c. 14 Nov 1787 George Armitage BARRACLOUGH Horbury Father: Thomas
c. 13 Dec 1812 George Armitage BARRACLOUGH Horbury, Edward & Elizth.

Any help would be appreciated.

Dave

Hi Dave,

Found this death,

Jacob Barroclough
Est year of birth 1809
Year of registration 1871
District Huddersfield

Jacob was a widow on the 1861 census, so between 1851-1861 its seems that Mary died in between these years.

Found these deaths these are just going by the district of Huddersfield and various spellings.

Mary Barraclough year 1854
Mary Barraclough year 1856
Mary Ann Barraclough year 1856
Mary Elizabeth Baraclough year 1858

Dont think thats the one if he is the one that married Susannah, there is a John Barrowclough born Huddersfield abt 1832 living in Oldham Lancashire in 1861 with wife Susannah.

This could be him

Year 1875
John Barrowclough
District Oldham
Born abt 1834

The site I use is playing up at the moment so unable to check vol and page numbers. This can be checked on free bmd.

The name Armitage could just be a coincidence or they could have been related in someway.

Hello juliejtp,

Thank you. After some more work on my tree I'll have to decide which ones get priority for certificate purchase.

The marriage only had 'Mary' so at the moment I can't choose between the four deaths, but at least I have a range now.

There are lots of John Barraclough in the area including this one who one researcher had originally put in my family tree until I decided to find out why descendants had a middle name of Armitage and decided John's parents were not Samuel and Hannah HITCHEN after all:

b. 6 Jun 1832 c. 26 Aug 1832 Ripponden

This one will have to wait for now. Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

I have just found Jacob Barraclough on the 1861 census for you. Lodging with him and his daughter Sarah is a Martha Armitage aged 37 so born about 1824.

There was a Margaret Armitage baptised 14 MAR 1824 Almondbury, Yorkshire, England daughter of James and Betty Armitage.

I cannot locate a Mary Armitage baptism around 1812 with parents James and Betty although the IGI Batch numbers list say that Almondbury baptisms have not yet been indexed for 1805-1812.

Hello Ben,

Thank you.

I have ordered a copy of this marriage from Leeds Register Office: Marriage Certificate Leeds : CE109/C/181

SPOUSE PARTNER
SURNAME ASKHAM SURNAME BARRACLOUGH
FORENAME(S) Mary E FORENAME(S) John
DATE OF MARRIAGE PLACE OF MARRIAGE
DAY MONTH YEAR 1854
NAME OF BUILDING, CHURCH OR REGISTER OFFICE AND LOCALITY Holy Trinity, Rothwell

I hope it gives me more than what I've got previously when paying for marriage records (eg just the number of times the names were proclaimed without objection)

Martha is a sister (to Mary) according to the 1851 Census:

Name : John BARRACLOUGH
Estimated birth Year : 1833
Relationship : Son
Father' Name : Jacob
Mother's Name : M (the copy I have only has M)
Where Born : ALMONDBURY YORKSHIRE
Registration District : HUDDERSFIELD

Other Household Members
Martha ARMITAGE : Sister age 27 Born ALMONDBURY YORKSHIRE

Name : Jacob BARRACLOUGH
Spouse : Mary ARMITAGE
Marriage : 4 Jun 1832 KIRKHEATON YORKSHIRE
Batch : M012722

That is one place where it says Mary and not just 'M'.

I'm slowly making progress.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

Armitage is quite a common name in Yorkshire. George Armitage BARRACLOUGH born in 1787 must have had a mothers maiden name or family name in his maternal side with the surname of Armitage the same as John Barraclough born in 1834 whose mothers maiden name was Armitage.

A few Barracloughs may have married a few Armitage's.

Hello Ben,

Yes, at one stage when I saw those two BARRACLOUGH with Armitage as a middle name I wondered if I was correct in saying John's parents are Jacob and Mary ARMITAGE. I hope the marriage certificate I've ordered will have his parents. I know there is a chance it will have nothing about any of the four parents.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Ben,

They have taken my money so they have received the form for the copy of the marriage certificate. I hope it does not get lost in the post. About a third of the stuff to and from Thailand seems to go missing.

What I can't find so far is the marriage of Richard ASKHAM to Mary and her family name. Their first child probably:

Name : Mary Elizabeth ASKHAM
Christening : 10 Aug 1834 Rothwell
Father : Richard ASKHAM Mother : Mary
Batch: C010612
