As part of the Cardwell Reforms of the 1870s, where single-battalion regiments were linked together to share a single depot and recruiting district in the United Kingdom, the 26th was linked with the 107th (Bengal Infantry) Regiment of Foot, and assigned to district no. 43 at Roussillon Barracks in Chichester. On 1 July 1881 the Childers Reforms came into effect and the regiment amalgamated with the 107th (Bengal Infantry) Regiment of Foot to form the Royal Sussex Regiment.


General Arthur Simcoe Baynes((b.1797. Southampton,(35th Reg Foot ))., from 1863 - 1875. Died, and was Buried in Malta, 13th Sept 1875. Colonel of 35th East Sussex Regt.

Thanks MLT......it did seem a bit ambitious.:biggrin:

Same thing with deaths.....he could have died anywhere. Not found in any later census records, so possibly snuffed it in the back of beyond somewhere.
