The above entry for 1881 (not 1871) has James as a servant.

The household has a head, 8 attendants, a cook, housemaid, laundress and 2 joiners so I don't think James was an inmate.

I don't think the 1891 Jas Allison is your man.
FMP has the full transcription, he is a hammerman, appears in other censuses as a smith's hammerman. born Renfrew, not Paisley. Wife Susan.

In 1871 there are 4 James Allison b 1826:- yours, this hammerman and two others.

can't find yours in 1891. There is a death of a James Allison aged 66 in Paisley in 1887. A bit older than your man but maybe possible?

I think the 1892 death is the hammerman.
we know he was alive in Renfrew in 1891, this 1892 death is in Renfrew, not Paisley where your man lived.
The hammerman's wife Susan is a widow living in Renfrew in 1901.

Probably right Elaine re Paisley - census 1841 - 1871 and marriage in High Church Paisley.

I know Mary died 1872 and 1st son named Robert fits and 2nd son named Stephen fits for Mary's father. 3rd son named James.
