Does this sound like your fella James?

The Courier-Mail (Brisbane, Qld. : 1933 - 1954)(about)
Saturday 31 March 1934

Mr. James Walker
The death occurred on Tuesday night of Maryborough's oldest resi- dent, Mr. James Walker. The late Mr. Walker, who was 97, remained at his work as a saddler until the last few months, walking two miles to work and two miles home daily. He was born in Cork, Ireland, and when he was four his family migrated to Aus- tralia on the Woodbridge, arriving at Port Jackson on March 21, 1841. A year after separation was effected in 1859 the cotton boom took place, and many people turned to the Wide Bay district. Mr. Walker was one of them, and at Gayndah he established a business. In 1877 he opened a business in Maryborough. For 81 years he stood at the saddler's bench, having signed his indenture on January 1, 1852. He took a prominent part in musical circles in Gayndah and in Maryborough, and as a flautist he had few equals in his day. He is sur- vived by one son, Mr. John Henry Walker (Maryborough), and three daughters, Mesdames W. Adam (Too- woomba), L. E. Gibson (Sydney), and J. W. Bates (Boompa).

Now that throws a spanner in the works. :2fun:

The James I thought I had was a watchmaker.

Ok, start from what I know is fact.

The Catherine in my tree is the one who died in Maryborough in 1915.

They married in the Wesleyan chapel in Chippendale.

The death in 1934 is the James she married. He arrived in 1842 from Ireland. He worked as a sadler.

James is the second son of John WALKER (a carpenter) of Park-street, Sydney.

From the shipping record William is the eldest son.

We need to find where and when William died to rule him out.

I have this one in my tree but now not sure if he fits:

Death 210/1874 WALKER WILLIAM J - JOHN - CHARLOTTE - SYDNEY

The Sydney Morning Herald - Wednesday 4 February 1874 p.1
DEATHS
On the 3rd instant, at his late residence, 48 Fitzroy-street, Chippendale, WILLIAM JOHN WALKER, eldest son of John Walker, of Paddington.

Probably this death:

1876/C0408 William Walker - - ** born Ireland aged about 38 years

It gets more complicated. :2fun:

Catherine's sister married (also a Wesleyan marriage) a WALKER and it seemed as if they were brothers. Now we have to prove they are not brothers.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Wednesday 18 May 1870 p.11
MARRIAGES
WALKER-FLETCHER.-April 20th, at Young, Lambing Flat, by the Rev. W. Robson, Wesleyan minister, George Walker, third son of Mr. John Walker, of 20 Park-street Sydney, N.S.W., to Emma Jane, third daughter of Mr. William Fletcher, storekeeper, Young, Lambing Flat, N.S.W.

Death 756/1880 WALKER GEORGE - JOHN - DIED SYDNEY SYDNEY

Why does it say Queensland papers please copy? I doubt it says that because of Emma's sister Catherine.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Wednesday 28 April 1880 p.1
DEATHS
WALKER.-April 27, at his residence, 521 George-street South, George Walker, aged 41 years, son of the late John Walker, watchmaker and jeweller, Cornhill, London. Home and Queensland papers please copy.

Not carpenter.

I doubt that. John Thomas is the youngest son.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Tuesday 18 June 1861 p.1
ADVERTISING
NOTICE.-The Partnership hitherto existing between JOHN THOMAS WALKER and TIMOTHY TILLOTSON JONES, of 338 George-street, watchmakers and jewellers, has been, this day, DISSOLVED by mutual consent....

The Sydney Morning Herald - Saturday 15 November 1862 p.3
ADVERTISING
WALKER'S CRYSTAL CASE WATCHES.
Exhibition Prize Medal, 1852.
JOHN T. WALKER, head of the late firm of Walker and Jones, Sydney, watchmaker and jeweller, having entered into business with his father, Mr. John Walker, 68 Cornhill, and 230 Regent-street, London, respectfulIy solicite from his friends and the public of New South Wales a continuance of the patronage so liberally accorded to him in Sydney. From the known celebrity of John Walker's watches and clocks, to which a prize medal has been awarded at the International Exhibition, persons forwarding their orders, accompanied by a remittance, to 68 Cornhill, may rest assure they will promptly obtain an article of the highest order of excellence at a considerable reduction upon Sydney prices. J. T. W. deems it necessary for the protection of colonial friends to state that all first-class goods sold by the late firm of Walker and Jones were manufactured by his father, and that no person in Sydney is now in a position to supply or execute any orders for goods of his manufacture. J. T. W. will at all times be happy to extend a hearty welcome, and to afford useful information to all visitors from New South Wales who may honour him with a call at 68 Cornhill, London.

Is this Emma's death or did she remarry after George died in 1880?

5090/1897 WALKER EMMA - UNKNOWN - UNKNOWN - LEICHHARDT

Oh. Catherine and Emma are not sisters after all. Emma is a niece.

John senior was making exclusive watches. He could not be the carpenter.

Looks as though we have two WALKER families, one from Ireland and one from England. John the watchmaker possibly married a Charlotte. He died after 3 Feb 1874 and before 27 Apr 1880 either in Sydney but probably London as there was no one left in Sydney to manufacture any watches as per that notice.

Not this one - He was a music seller.
Death 2724/1874 WALKER JOHN - JOHN - JANE - PADDINGTON

The Sydney Morning Herald - Friday 28 August 1874 p.8
DEATHS
WALKER-Aug. 20, Paddington, John Walker, aged 82 years.

Augusta Bynon's bad luck continued with the wreck of the Dunbar off Sydney Heads in August 1857 as her husband, William, was a passenger on board and drowned intestate, leaving only £200. This was when Augusta Bynon and her three young children moved to a new Suffolk House in Pitt Street, where she continues her millinery and dressmaking business. In 1859 Augusta Bynon will finally have some good luck when she marries her third husband, John Walker, a watch and clock manufacturer. In about 1862 they will return to London, where John Walker will join his father's established watchmaking business in Regent Street. The couple will have three more daughters, born in New South Wales, France and England, and by 1881 Augusta Walker will be living in Kensington in London, with her husband and three of her daughters, as well as two domestic servants, having managed to make her way both back to England and up in society. Thanks gibbo. You have just found a spouse for John Thomas, the one who placed that ad on 15 November 1862.

I wonder if we can find his mother's name and his arrival and his death. :)

I dont think this Walker clockmaker mob are yours are they?
:2fun: :2fun:

So you think that George, the third son was born in Sydney after they arrived from Ireland. And that Emma married the son of a carpenter and not the son of a watchmaker? And therefore the death in 1880 of the George, the son of John the watchmaker is NOT the spouse of Emma. Therefore we have no death for either Emma or her spouse George?

We need to know what sort of business was at 20 Park street in Sydney 1859-1870, the two marriages. Carpenters shop or watchmakers?

Thanks. A Bookshop. :2fun: Selling mainly religious books.

MILTON'S Last Thoughts on the Trinity, Is. 3d.
Religions opinions of Milton, Locke, mid Newton, 2d.
Blanco White on Heresy and Orthodoxy, 2s.
_At Mrs. WALKER'S, 20, Park-street.

Can we tie the death and burial of the George at CofE Rookwood in 1880 to Emma? His death notice does not mention a spouse. Age at death if correct indicates a birth around 1839.

Can we find a birth in NSW for another George son of the carpenter? Possibly:

V18432464 27A/1843 WALKER GEORGE S - JOHN - MARY

I can look that one up on film. It should give John's occupation.

It would be good to know if Mrs Walker at 20 Park-street was Mary.

This is not a V record so not easily found on film but I know this is a Wesleyan marriage so I might be able to find it on a different set of films at the Mitchell Library. Need to know John's occupation.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Monday 13 June 1859 p.6
MARRIAGES
WALKER-FLETCHER.-May 18th, by the Rev. J. Oram, at Chippendale Chapel, James Walker, second son of Mr. John Walker, Park street, to Catherine, youngest daughter of Mrs. Robert Fletcher, Sydney.

You might be right about the watchmakers. :D

If we do rule out the 1880 death then we have no death for George and Emma.

Looks like only these
Children
20049/1872 WALKER HARRY WILLIAM GEORGE EMMA JANE YOUNG
21258/1873 WALKER PERCIVAL SHINE GEORGE EMMA JANE YOUNG
22484/1875 WALKER MINNIE M GEORGE EMMA J YOUNG

Damn. I just noticed the middle name. :D Mary nee SHINE from Ireland.
