DEATH OF MRS ALLEN
On 6th inst Mrs Bethiah Allen, a very old resident of Glenbrook, passed away at her residence, ''Koondroo," Moore Street, in her 93rd year.
She was the widow of the late James Allen, of Camden, who predeceased her 48 years ago.
She leaves two sons and six daughters. One daughter (Edith) predeceased her.
Deceased came of an old Australian family, her grandfather being James Squire of Ryde. Her mother was an Australian born, her maiden name being Sarah Squire, of Ryde. She married Charles Baterson Turtle, of England.

Deceased was born in Sydney, and educated at Christ Church School. She was present at the laying of the foundation stone of St. Andrew's Cathedral and the turning of the sod of the first railway. She was reminiscent of early days.

ALLEN - March 10 at his residence Camden, James Allen the beloved husband of Bettuah Allen, aged 47, leaving a sorrowful wife and nine children to mourn their loss.

By special license at the Wesleyan Chapel Newtown on the 6th instant by Rev Benjamin Chapman, James Allen eldest son of Mr James Allen of Newtown to Miss Bithiah Turtle, youngest daughter of Mr Charles Turtle (Late of Redfern).

TURTLE - At his residence Marrickville 6th June 1871, Charles Batterson Turtle, copper-plate printer born in London 31st January 1795, baptised St Ann's Church, educated Blue Coat School St Paul's London, leaving a widow, three sons and two daughters. London Papers please copy. Inserted by his eldest daughter M Lavett.

Occupation 'Sawyer' must be a transcription error from the church register to the form sent to the Registrar General. The father of the next child baptised was a sawyer.

Charles Turtle was born on month day 1834, at birth place, to Charles Turtle and Sarah Turtle (born Lucas).
Charles was born circa 1795.
Sarah was born circa 1795.

NSW 1828 Census has 2 x Charles Turtle, 1 arrived aged 26 – a CP - on ? Hart 1823 then has 7 yrs, labourer of London to Bathurst

Other Charles is age 30 – free on ship Baring 1819 also has 7 yrs – catholic - a servant to Elizabeth Stranger. Kissing Point

A tree has for Charles arrival – 26 June 1819 Sydney – Convicted Middlesex 22 Oct 1818 – 7 years, a printer 5ft 4 1/2in fair brown hair, blue eyes on Vessel β€œBaring”.

Ticket of Leave 4 Nov 1824 – married Sarah Lucas nee Squire 5 Nov 1829 and died 6 June 1871

So arrived on the 'Baring' and ToL 1824 then free by 1828 muster.

Three generations of Charles. The funeral notice has the youngest [Charles Henry] as junior and the eldest as senior [Charles B]. They didn't call the other 'middle' for some reason.

Don't know why the convict records have the name as James.
