Hello,

James BROWN born abt 1820 Scotland according to 1861 census.

- parents William and Jean KIRK

I can find no such marriage in Scotland or England 1800-1825.

Yeah not much to go on and I don't even know if he was in Scotland or England in 1851 but he married in 1852 in Cornwall.

1852 Marriages solemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of St. Austell in the County of Cornwall
No 466 January 15th - James Brown Full Bachelor Merchant St. Austell William Brown Yeoman -
Caroline Marie Cleave Full Spinster - St. Austell Thomas Cleave Gardener
Married in the Parish Church by Licence By me F. Todd Vicar
Both signed
Witnesses: Thomas Cleave, Elizabeth Olva ?

James is a draper so that might help.

I'd like a look up for James in 1851 please.

Regards,

Dave

a few possibilities still in scotland but all either married or living with differently named parents than William and Jean.

Barbara

Hello Barbara,

Thanks you very much.

That seems a possibility as in 1861 he has some travelling drapers including one born in Scotland visiting him in Cornwall. I think he'd be in England in 1851 as he married in January 1852.

I wonder though about the accuracy of the details on his death reg given that there is no sign of a marriage that fits. Pity about that.

I wonder if the 'nephew' bit is worth chasing.

Regards,

Dave

I can find no baptisms for the children born Blackburn on FS or Lancs OPC.

I can't find the marriage on FS.

There is a George ADAMSON & Jean KIRK marriage in 1822 in Fife ???

Where did you get his mother's name from, Dave?

The Adamsons could have used a Presbyterian church so baptisms might be there. Sure there is a website for Scottish people in Lancashire but will have to search for it. Something to do with Manchester mostly and they have an online index. Sorry not to have url.

Away to search

Death reg, Barbara.

Death 6 Dec 1900/C03619 Brown James - William Brown - Jean Kirk

South Brisbane Cemetery
Brown James 07 / 12 / 1900 Unknown
Reid Georgina E 03 / 05 / 1929 Unknown
Portion 8C Grave 293

I have no idea yet who Georgina is. Caroline died in 1920 so not a 2nd spouse. Curiously, I can't even find Caroline in the same cemetery.

Does not look as though Georgina is a married daughter - Jean, Caroline, Elizabeth & Louisa.

30 years had not passed so it should not be an unrelated person in the same grave.

Well, I'll have to eat my hat or something :D It is a married daughter.

Death 1929/B7583 Georgina Elizabeth Reid - James Brown - Caroline Maria Cleane

The draper is the right age, but is he the right one?

No baptisms for the two born in Blackburn so can't see who the mother is - Ann or Isabella or Ellen or Catharine? Wish we had an age at death for Catharine and Ellen.

Still don't know if Jean KIRK is right or not. I can't find a death that fits either.

Any other meanings for 'nephew' we have missed? I expected Adam's spouse to be a Brown or a Kirk.

Seems the only info is a passenger list in a newspaper. I've not found it yet. Can't see the family in NSW or Qld records so no film reel to look up to see place of origin, etc...

Stuck is the word.

Well, I googled the name of his residence in Brisbane "Glenearlie" and I got to Glenearly, Dalbeattie, Dumfries.

Several trees just have his birth as 1819 or 1820 Scotland with no parents listed. They also can't even agree he died in 1900 with some having 1903.

Assuming the death reg is wrong listing his mother as Jean KIRK at least it seems his father is William:
