Aye, could be anywhere, if he married in Derbyshire and had his first child in Lancs. Could look for his parents or have you done that already?

Hello Barbara,

Actually W Derby registration district covers part of Liverpool, Lancashire. :)

I'm basing some stuff on a tree that has this and trying to prove it could be right but the names are all very common.

BUCHANAN James
Christening
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 13 Dec 1829
Christening Date: 10 Jan 1830
Recorded in: North Leith Midlothian Scotland
Father: James BUCHANAN
Mother: Elizabeth COCKRAN

He married in 1854 but could have been in Scotland or England, I was hoping Lancashire, in 1851.

Just found this:

groom's name: James Buchanan
groom's birth date:
groom's birthplace:
groom's age:
bride's name: Elizabeth Cochran
bride's birth date:
bride's birthplace:
bride's age:
marriage date: 10 Mar 1829
marriage place: North Leith,Midlothian,Scotland
groom's father's name:
groom's mother's name:
bride's father's name: John Cochran
bride's mother's name:
groom's race:
groom's marital status:
groom's previous wife's name:
bride's race:
bride's marital status:
bride's previous husband's name:
indexing project (batch) number: M19506-6
system origin: Scotland-ODM
source film number: 1067768
reference number:

The only other clue I have is that a son of James & Sarah Jane was given the middle name Grey (sometimes Gray in records and trees).

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

25 Dec 1854 James Buchanan, 24, b., Labourer, father; John & Sarah Jane Williams, 23, s., father: John (lawyer), Toxteth Park, St John the baptist, mar. Cannot read the witnesses, but can see this: Robert ? and Elisabeth ? neither name looks like an immediate relative.

Toxteth Park is within the West Derby Reg. dist.

Hello Geoff,

Thanks.

That creates a problem. Death reg has his father's name as James.

I'll check the shipping reel next time I'm at the library to see what it says about his parents. As of 1856 it should list their names and if dead and if living then where.

The children born in Australia were:

James
Eliza
Louisa
John Grey

Regards,

Dave

At the moment I don't know if these are the right ones with an error or not:

Deaths
355/1885 BUCHANAN JAMES - JAMES - ELIZABETH - SYDNEY ** John
9514/1905 BUCHANAN SARAH J - JOHN - JANE - MARRICKVILLE ** Sarah

Only one in Ryerson:

BUCHANAN Sarah Jane Death notice 11JUL1905 Death 67 late of Stanmore Sydney Morning Herald 12JUL1905

Sarah was born abt 1831 according to marriage and shipping record so that death does not fit.

Did James and Sarah Jane both die in New Zealand?

NSW birth 8387/1861 BUCHANAN LOUISA L - JAMES - SARAH J - LIVERPOOL

NZ Marriage 1879/3186 Louisa Lavinia Buchanan - Sydney George Millington

Evening Post, Volume LXIII, Issue 20, 23 January 1902 p. 6
DEATH
BUCHANAN.-On 9th January, 1902, at 104 Bridge-road, Glebe, Sydney, John Grey Buchanan, eldest beloved brother of Mrs. S. G. Millington, Woolcombe-street, Wellington, in his 40th year, deeply regretted.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Saturday 8 March 1902 p.1
Deaths.
BUCHANAN.-January 9, at Prince Alfred Hospital, John Gray Buchanan, the dearly loved husband of Florence A. Buchanan, in his 33rd year. Deeply regretted. New Zealand papers please copy.

It does say 33 but that's an error. Sister in NZ knew his right age.

Im not so sure he was dead then Dave
It says eldest son of James Buchanan, late of Lyttelton, New Zealand

It doesnt say LATE James Buchanan, only says late of Lyttelton so i took that meaning that is where James lived and not so much that he himself was late.

I can't find a John BUCHANAN married to an Elizabeth with them living together in 1841 or 1851 in Midlothian.

I can't pin down 'Gallawater' except that a river runs through Midlothian.

Shipping record's are not 100% reliable but it does say John & Elizth. living in Gallawater.

Thanks Gibbo. :)

Not sure. Lawrence is much further south.

Don't know.

John Henry born abt 1862 but where? But we know this one is a son and he didn't die young:

NSW Birth 3166/1862 BUCHANAN JOHN G - JAMES - SARAH J - CHIPPENDALE

NZ marriage 1884/3220 Lilian Dunikowski - John Henry Buchanan

It's looking as though the Lawrence ones are a different family.

A possible birth in NZ if they arrived there between 1865 and 1868:

1868/28200 Buchanan Arthur - Sarah Jane - James

Looks as though Arthur is the youngest.

This tree makes no sense at all - HERE

The mother is not Mary Jane GRAHAM. I can find no marriage in 1865 or near in NSW or NZ that fits.

We know from death notices in NZ paper (even though they are wrong in saying John Grey died in his residence in Glebe) that two daughters born in Liverpool, NSW married in NZ. This is the other one:

NSW birth 8528/1859 BUCHANAN ELIZA J - JAMES - SARAH J - LIVERPOOL

NZ marriage 1880/1023 Eliza Jane Buchanan - John Baillie
