No marriage found in Midlothian for a John Buchanan to an Elizabeth.

I had a quick look at our efforts in 2012 and we covered it quite well without success, doesn't look as though much has changed

Gallawater/Galashiels and their variants are not easy to pin down either..

Yes, Selkirkshire, it's not far from Selkirk.. Possibly a number of boundary changes since the mid-19c..

I have no reason to suspect the details in the shipping record so John a spirit dealer and Elizabeth should be in 1851 census somewhere but I've had no luck on previous visits to library.

Not sure but I searched in Midlothian and didn't find the family.

Rechecked the image, he gives his native place as Gallawater, Midlothian and his parents living at Gallawater.

Maybe there was a Gallawater in Midlotian?

Yeah, by Robert Burns.. refers to Galashiels I believe which is probaby what we don't want [too far south]

I can't find a John Buchanan in 1841 in Midlothian who is a spirit dealer or similar old enough to be the father of James born abt 1830.
