Think your right there Geoff. My theory for what it's worth is that James was the illegitimate son of either Ann Partington, William Partington or Richard Partington and the family used Margaret's maiden name as a cover up.

ok, here we go another theory, Ann Partington b1843 was not Robert and Margaret's daughter she was the illegitimate daughter of Margaret Lowe, Robert and Margaret did'nt marry until 1846.
LOWE, ANN - GRO Reference: 1843 M Quarter in BOLTON UNION Volume 21 Page 92

This backs up my previous theory that James was Ann's daughter. If you get James's birth cert it may have mothers name as informant and maybe an address.

This was the only one I found which ties in with the one registered Wigan, couldn’t find a baptism for Ann who was registered in Bolton.

Ann and Matthew are living Hindley in 1871. Ann’s place of birth is Bolton. No nearer in finding James baptism. The one I was following was a different James with single mum Ellen. 😊

It would be good to find James's baptism, searched all the baptism's at All Saints, Hindley just in case but not there, now trying nearby paishes.
