There is a James Malcolm 23 Joiner Journeyman born Largs who is a Boarder st Maryfield Place, Largs in 1881. He is the only James Malcolm I can find in Largs in 1881.

Just checked 40 Nelson Street in 1881 and the family living there are called Maxwell

Thanks Emeltee.

The census I have only show Nelson Street, Largs as does this ...

There is a newspaper article in August 1881 of the death of an Archibald Malcolm aged about 64. He was a member of the Largs Volunteer Artillery, and died suddenly while at the railway station with his local company. His residence was Nelson Street, Largs.

... so I don't know if James moved back home or if Archibald lived at No 40 or not.

Just discovered that there were 4 families living in 40 Nelson Street in 1881 and one of them was Archibald Malcolm and wife Elizabeth. No James living there for the Census.
