Okay looks like John is with his aunt Christian Miller born 1820 in the 1871 census who was nee Thom
West Crosscauseway, St Giles.
She was the widower of Wm Miller. William alive in 1861 and cross referenced births and marriage index to make sure she was Thom

So only possible is at 7 Drummond Street, St Cuthbert
James 28 House pointer ( he is joiner in other census) born Linlithgow
Mgt 29 wife born Liberton
James 5 born Liberton
Alexander 3 born England
Elizabeth 1870 England.

But I would be wary as there is a James Thom who married a Mgt Jardine in Newington 1864 and there are one or two James and Mgt Thom deaths in the time between 1862 and 1871 so John could have gone to his aunt out of necessity.

Thanks Barbara.

So the one with his aunt could be the son of James & Margaret Jardine.

From age at marriage my James seems to have been born before the 1864 marriage of James to Mgt Jardine.

Bit of a mystery tho as can't find a death for Margaret Paterson/Thom. Any chance they came over already? I can find James in the 41 census with his sister Christian. He was born 1834 Midlothian and sister Christian 1821. Father John and mother Jean/Jane. This is a different age to the one I found in 1871 so you can strike off the one I found as he is consistent in age 1851/1861. Your James is a mason in 1861 still with his parents just before he marries. Let me know if you want details. Will take another look. bugging me now!!

Sorry Dave think we are cross purposes here. Think John with Christian is your John but not the son of the family I found 71 I don't think the ones I found 71 are yours. Think that Margaret is Jardine. Yours has mother Paterson but that death you found for Margaret Paterson bit old to have John in 1862 Will keep looking as don't like being beat. Could your family have come over and then John later?
