Hi James is my great-great grandfather. I understand there is no exact record of when he left home or arrived in Australia but according to a book on the family history "In 'Men of Mark, 1788-1888': there is the following reference to James: 'he arrived in Melbourne in 1857, visited Adelaide, and then returning to Victoria occupied himself with gold mining for some time. He then left for Adelong'.". All indications point to him arriving in 1857 with his brother John. Wherever he landed he joined the rush to Kiandra in late 1859 or early 1860. After a bad year in 1860 he moved to Adelong, and he and brothers John and Richard staked claims in Adelong and became shareholders in the Prowse and Woodward Mine, one of the best on the Old Reef Line. James purchased five blocks of land along the Adelong Creek and built Jessamine (later Jasmine) Cottage on one and established an income generating orchard with seeds imported from California. He married my great-great grandmother Mary Ann Wiley at Jessamine Cottage on 6 April 1864. Mary Ann had apparently arrived in the district in 1862 at the invitation of her uncle Irvine Crain and was 20 when she married James. She was apparently (according to the Tumult & Adelong Times) "born in Enniskillen, County of Fermanagh in Northern Ireland, 30 January 1844, daughter of Joseph Wiley and Mary Ann Crain" with the Wileys originally believed to have come from Scotland.

This is as much as I have on Mary Ann given the history is a Prowse history. I've attached James and Mary Ann's headstone at Adelong Cemetery for what use it may be to you :)

for James' date of birth he apparently wrote in the family bible in his own hand: "7 November 1836 at Penzance". But there appears to be no official record.

If John arrived with James then that might help find them.

Searching PROV in 1850s but using filter '185' I can't find a John and a James on the same vessel - Prowse/Prows/Prouse

Age does not fit.

Age 20 11A MAR 165 'SEA PARK' 1858 PROWSE, JOHN
