The City Coroner held on inquiry yesterday morning, at the Benevolent Asylum, Pitt Street South, touching the death of Mr. J. R. Channon, who was found lying dead in the Domain, on the previous afternoon, with a pistol shot through his head...

The Sydney Morning Herald - Thursday 5 May 1870 p.8

Hi DaveHam9,
Anything you want to know about Frances hamilton Baker just ask. I have an extensive knowledge of her siblings also. Most people (especially the copycats on Ancestry) have her mother's name and year of death incorrect. I also noticed in some of the threads that the building of "Pakenham" in Hornsby has been attributed to James Robert and Elizabeth Channon, it was actually their son James (1849-1920) and his wife Sarah.
I am finding it very hard to navigate this site, any tips on how to get straight to you threads after logging in?
Cheers

Hello Ann,

Thanks. I will have some queries you can help me with. Yes, I know not all out there about the family is correct. I also know some details can't be proved 100%.

Your user name will turn green soon now you have made three posts.

You can use the search function - pull-down menu on 'Search' on the menu bar - enter a key word such as 'channon' and 'find posts by' DaveHam9.

Hello ALM1307,

Thank you very much.

That helps a lot. I didn't know the William I was after was a printer and publisher. I knew there were trees that didn't agree and that there were several possible marriages.

I do use TROVE a lot and have offered the NLA many suggestions to improve the function.

Regards,

Dave

26854/1892 CHANNON ERNEST S THOMAS FRANCES H NOWRA

All correct, John and Elsie are Channon buried together at Rookwood but Elsie is listed as Arthur Channon on the Rookwood search engine. The dates are correct for Elsie's death - BDM 3407/1888 but looks like the Rookwood records are incorrect.
Cheers

Hello Anne,

Thank you very much.

Yes, the Rookwood site has some errors in the database but most are probably errors in original records. I have some buried on the day they died when newspaper notices indicate a burial 2 days later.

Dave

Hello Anne,

I've looked at this several times and got lost every time. Is this the same Thomas who married Frances?

The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848-1954) - Friday 10 December 1858
SHOULD this meet the eye of HENRY CHANNON, son of James Channon, (vet. surg.), Taunton, Somerset, he is requested to write to his cousin Thomas Channon, Adelong Quartz-reef, Tumut, N.S.W.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,
I have always thought that it is James Robert (1830-1870)'s brother Thomas.
Thomas married to Frances would only have been 6 or 7 in 1858.
Thomas died in Sydney but lived in the Tumut, Adelong, Frogmore Districts of NSW. He is buried with his brother at Rookwood.

THOMAS CHANNON, b. 19 Jul 1835, Exeter, St Sidwell, England; d. 31 Aug 1891.

Hello Anne,

Oh. You are so right about the age in 1858.

THOMAS CHANNON, b. 19 Jul 1835, Exeter, St Sidwell, England; d. 31 Aug 1891.
I notice from the 1841 census that Thomas, brother of James R, was not born in county (Cornwall) but I wasn't sure he was born in Exeter. I'm wondering where the 31 August came from. Death certificate? I can't see a notice in TROVE or date of death on cemetery record so I just had date as August. I had the funeral notice.

Do you know who Thomas, born Exeter, married?

Do you know where this Henry William fits in?

Marriage 870/1901 CHANNON HENRY W - NEWBERY ELIZABETH J - BOOROWA

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,
The date of birth was given to me from baptismal record.
Date of death from NSW State Records
Surname FirstName Locality DateOfDeath DateDutyPaid Item Reel Remarks
CHANNON T Frogmore 31/08/1891 15/04/1897 [19/10193] 3026

About Henry I haven't done much on him yet but he married twice, jean Victoria Lang and Elizabeth J Newberry.

CHANNON Jean Victoria Frogmore 11/01/1898 28/03/1898 [19/10194] 3026 or Jane Victoria

On another note:
There is a Portrait of William Kellet Baker and one of Jane Baker in a book in some libraries. I have not been able to get a copy yet but there are other portraits that he did online. Very interesting and exciting.
