Hello,

I'm looking for a Jane ANDERSON born about 1817 in 1841 with parents Robert and Maggie (Margaret) in W Lothian or Culross, Perth, or Fife.

That's all I have at the moment, sorry. I know it's a very common name. I can't find a matching birth in SP.

Regards,

Dave

Hello juliejtp,

Thanks for looking. Yes, the combination of Jane and ANDERSON makes it a very common name. I asked because I knew she was not yet married.

09/03/1844 SANDS JAMES JANE ANDERSON/FR4858 M Dunfermline /FIFE 424/ 0170 0062

I can't find her birth/baptism in SP at all. Jane and spouse James went to Australia in 1849.

Regards,

Dave

Hello juliejtp,

I'm getting nothing out of SP so I'll have to buy a NSW death certificate to try and solve this one.

Regards,

Dave

Hello,

I now have a copy of Jane's death certificate. It gives a tiny bit more information. Jane's birth is probably closer to 1819 than 1817 and her father Robert was an Innkeeper.

Jane SANDS
Date of Death: 20 Sep 1890 Braidwood, NSW
Occupation: - Age: 70
Place of Birth: Scotland - 40 years in Colonies
Father: Robert ANDERSON - Innkeeper
Mother: Maggie (Surname not stated)
Place of Marriage: Scotland
Age at Marriage: 25
Name of Spouse: James SANDS
Children: No Issue
Informant: James SANDS, Husband, Braidwood
Cause of Death: Senile Decay - 6 weeks
Medical Attendant: Dr FLORANCE 20 Sep 1890
Date of Burial: 22 Sep 1890 Braidwood
Minister: Rev J S DOBSON (Religion not stated)
Undertaker: R McDONALD
Witnesses: C O'LOUGHLIN, Alexr McRAE
Ref#: 1890/3378

I'm not so sure about the 'Maggie' being correct but I'd say father 'Robert ANDERSON an Innkeeper' is probably more likely to be correct.

I still think Jane/Janet/Jean if not born in Culross, Perthshire or West Lothian or Fife then was probably in one of those places in 1841 census.

Jane married in 1844 in Dunfermline, Fife and in 1841 her future spouse was living in Dunfermline.

Would some kind person please look again and see if Jane/Jean/Janet ANDERSON born abt 1819 and father Robert an Innkeeper can be found in 1841. Most likely place Dunfermline, Fife because her future spouse was a weaver and had no reason to be travelling out of the city for them to have met between 1841 and 1844. I am guessing now. :D Damn it if he was a 'Journeyman weaver'

Addition: Of course, Jane may not be with her parents in 1841.

Thanks.

Dave

Hello,

It is probably something we won't be able to solve. It's possible Jane's parents died before 1841 and very likely she was not with them even if they were still living.

I have found this one that stands out:

Piece: SCT1841/458 Place: Torryburn -Fife Enumeration District: 2
Civil Parish: Torryburn Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 2 Page: 13
Address: Torry Or New Mills

Surname First name(s) *** Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
YATES William M 39 Engine Worker Outside Census County (1841)
YATES James M 16 Engine Worker Outside Census County (1841)
YATES John M 11 Fife
Page: 2/14
YATES Jane F 40 Outside Census County (1841)
ANDERSON Jane F 20 Coal Drawer Outside Census County (1841)
YATES Janet F 13 Fife
YATES Katherine F 9 Fife
YATES Mary F 7 Fife

Future spouse James was born in Torryburn on 15 Oct 1814.

I did find a Robert ANDERSON Innkeeper with wife Margaret and daughter Jane in Dumfries-shire in 1841 but they are all way too young.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Maddie,

Thank you very much for looking. The name is a common one and Jane is probably not with parents in 1841.

Yes, I have two Hotmail accounts and Fred is an alias. Dave is a very old nickname.

Dave

I'm not so sure about the 'Maggie' being correct...
I viewed the shipping reel yesterday.

Arrived 9 Jun 1849 on the 'Diana'
SANDS
James 33 Mason Torreburn Fife James & Elizabeth Dunfermline Fife C. of Sct. Both None Good None
Jane 32 House Servant Dunfermline Robert & Jane Anderson both dead C. of Sct. Both None Good None

So parents had died by 1849 but no clue as to if they both died before 1841. Also, still the possibility Jane was not living with them even if they were alive in 1841.

Assuming the marriage was in Dunfermline then there are these:

Robert Anderson
Scotland, Marriages, 1561-1910
marriage: 28 Jun 1803 Dunfermline,Fife,Scotland
spouse: Janet Duff/Duffin

Robert Anderson
Scotland, Marriages, 1561-1910
marriage: 13 Apr 1812 Dunfermline,Fife,Scotland
spouse: Jean Mackie

Robert Anderson
Scotland, Marriages, 1561-1910
marriage: 23 Apr 1813 Dunfermline,Fife,Scotland
spouse: Janet Hog

Jane to Maggie seems a bit odd but working with Robert & Maggie/Margaret didn't help.

Robert & Jane both dead by 1849 but no idea if they were alive in 1841.

The only other clue is that Robert was an Innkeeper.

FreeCEN seems to be down.

Birth/Baptism - Janet ANDERSON 1 March 1815 Dunfermline, Fife - Robert & Janet Hog

If age at death and age in shipping record are not way out and if father = Robert and born Dunfermline is correct then there seems to be no other birth/baptism record that fits.

Marriage is no help:

09/03/1844 SANDS JAMES JANE ANDERSON/FR4858 M Dunfermline /FIFE 424/ 0170 0062

"James Sands Weaver Dunfermline and Jane Anderson willingly there gave in their names for proclamation in order to Marriage being regularly proclaimed and no objections made their Certificate to that effect was granted."

I can find no tree at all with Jane.

Thanks Barbara.

I went back to SP looking for a birth/baptism for Jane with mother = Jane/Jean/Janet and didn't get very far.

1 01/03/1815 ANDERSON JANET ROBERT ANDERSON/JANET HOG FR2888 F Dunfermline /FIFE 424/ 0090 0378
2 08/11/1818 ANDERSON JANET ROBERT ANDERSON/JANET YOUNG F Aberdour (Fife) /FIFE 401/ 0020 0268

Pity the death certificate says maiden name unknown.

I'm assuming the Dunfermline on shipping record is pob but it might not be. The marriage does not say Dunfermline for Jane.

Can we rule out the Janet born in 1815?

Regards,

Dave

difficult as that couple only see to have had one child (in Fife)

The other couple in Aberdour had quite a few children.

looks like I am ruling the Young out rather!

1841
Robert Anderson
Age: 62
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1779
Gender: Male
Where born: Fife, Scotland

Civil parish: Aberdour
County: Fife
Address: Village Of Aberdour Easter
Occupation: Ag Lab
Parish Number: 401
Household Members: Name Age
Robert Anderson 62
William Anderson 30
Janet Young 63
Ann Anderson 20
Robert Anderson 15
Elisabeth Rollie

They had an Ann and Robert, Robert and Janet Young, and think that is her going by her maiden name so this one isn't an innkeeper.

Thanks Barbara.

Ruling one out is still progress.

Time I got some sleep again. ;)

I think the next thing is to try and find a death for Janet with mother's name = HOG.

Zero with HOG and 40 with HOGG 1855-1901.

Dave
