I'd like the census ref for 1901 thanks. Neither Jane nor William have been found yet in 1891.

Something is not right. Probate for Jane has her as a widow ???

Ancestry has Jane mis-transcribed as Chesney.

1891, Jane Chedzey, possible

64 Archbishops Place, Lewisham
Jane Chedzey, 50, single, living on own means, Surrey, eccentric(in end column re disabilities)

age doesn't quite match and place of birth wrong but could be explained by the comment "eccentric". This could also explain why the couple split up.

Civil Parish: Lambeth
Ecclesiastical parish: Holy Trinity
Town: Brixton
Registration district: Lambeth
Sub registration district: Brixton
ED, institution, or vessel: 25
Piece: 412

re probate for Jane having her as a widow.

The executor of her will was Rev Walter Hobbs, Baptist Minister. There is quite a bit about him on-line, he was definitely not a relative. he was Baptist minister at Norwood 1880 - 1914. He was also a Guardian of the Poor in the parish of Lambeth for 24 years.

He conducted the service when she was buried at Norwood Cemetery. I think he was just dealing with her affairs either as her minister or as a Guardian of the Poor and he didn't know her background so just assumed she was a widow.

Many thanks Elaine.

I knew my tree had to have at least one "eccentric" in it somewhere.
