Hi,
Does anybody have information about the Glyde family from Salehurst Sussex. My great great grandmother was Jane Glyde born about 1820 - I don't know her exact date. She married in 1843 William Sherwood in St Clements Hastings. On 1843 marriage certificate it says her father is John Glyde a labourer. I have not been able to find when he was born or who her mother was. There are a lot of Glyde's in the Salehurst area but I do not seem to be able to see how they fit with each other.

Has anyone any ideas what I should do next.

Minnie

Hi Minnie,

Found this family name spelt Glide on the 1841 census
civil parish Saleshurst, registration district Ticehurst

Mary Glide age 45 occ charwoman
Jane Glide age 20
Ellen Glide age 4

All born in county.

As the 1841 census dosnt give household relationships its hard to tell whether Mary is a widow or not.

William and Jane are on the 1851 census living at Robertsbridge listed above them on the census return is a William Glyde widow age 49 occ ag lab born Salehurst with son George age 18 and lodgers John and Ellen Mason.

Minnie,

It looks like Ellen could be Janes child. On the 1851 census she is with her grandmother Mary Glyde transcribed as Glynn by Ancestry. It seems that parish records will be the next step.

Hi.
Thanks for your replies. I thought William Glyde was her father until I recently got her marriage certificate and it says it is John Glyde and I cannot find information about him. Yes Mary must be her mother and she had Ellen before she married William Sherwood in 1843. I do not think Mary Glide was a widow as on Jane's marriage certificate it does not say that her father is deceased.

Hi I am Gerry Glyde. My greatx4 grandfather, Lawrence was born in Salehurst in 1815. His father and brother were named John. The brother was a farmer for most of his life and lived until his 90's as did Lawrence. Lawrence and John's mother was Charlotte who were married in Horsham but probably were from Salehurst. I too am having great difficulty in linking the Glyde's from Salehurst which is a tiny village. A couple of miles outside of the village is Poppinghole Lane where some ancestors were farm labourers. The family has links with Hastings, Salehust, (and East Anglia) from my family line

Hope that helps

Gerry

Hi,
I am not sure that your branch of the Glyde family is the same as mine. My Jane Glyde (in the 1871 census) was born in Robertsbridge which is very near Salehurst. In the 1841 census it has a Jane Glyde aged 20 years living with Mary Glyde aged 46 years and Ellen Glyde aged 4 years. There is no mention on this census of John Glyde her father. It was from her marriage certificate that I discovered John Glyde was her father. With you saying that Charlotte was the mother of Lawrence and John it does not seem to tie up with what I have found out.
