Re: 1851&61 census look up north yorkshire please

Had another look on the 1851 census for Jane, came up with this, as I had a look at the 1861 census and there was a stepchild with the name of Fishburn did I look at the right one.

1851 as follows:-

civil parish Winton, Stank and Hallikeld, reg dist northallerton, sub reg dist Appleton.

William Brown age 17 servant born Newby Wisk
Jane Fishburn age 16 servant born Ainderby Steeple
John Marshall age 14 farm Labourer born Danby Wisk
Christopher Stockel age 59 head farmer born Winton
Dorothy Stockel age 30 neice house keeper born West Harsley
Thomas Stockel age 27 nephew farmer West Harsley.

If this is Jane, wonder why she changed her surname. These place names look a bit strange.

Re: 1851&61 census look up north yorkshire please

Thanks Julie,
I know some of the place names are rather strange.
Could you possibly tell me if on the 1851 census for Rachel (living with Mary), did it have the name of the street they lived?. Must find out about Jane wonder why she was a Fishburn?, i couldn't find her marriage to Charles Breward, maybe because i was looking for Jane WOODHOUSE i'll try loking for FISHBURN, if i find it then i'll know it's her.
Thanks again :) .

Re: 1851&61 census look up north yorkshire please

Hi Lightly,

Glad you found a marriage for Jane. I've been having a look at the marriages, but I've been all over over the place with them. Had a thought perhaps Rachel was married before to a Fishburn, but could'nt find a marriage. That may account for the difference of 12yrs or so difference bewtween Jane and Rachels birth. Looked up on census and there are few Fishburns born the same place as Jane. If you send off for Janes marriage cert it may give you the name of her father? or perhaps Thomas's birth cert. If Jane was born out of wedlock there are bastardly bonds (hope I've spelt it right). I'll see if I can find out anything.

Re: 1851&61 census look up north yorkshire please

Hi Julie, i've looked on the I.G.I and found quite a few Fishburns from Ainderby Steeple, getting myself confused over the Fishburns had to take a break for a while, (it was giving me a headache), although i now need to find out about this Jane Fishburn or woodhouse, i also found a John Woodhouse parents Thomas And Rachel he was born 1832 according to the I.G.I,
So i have Mary Woodhouse born 1827,
Jane Woodhouse born 1830
John Woodhouse born 1832, then the age gap to Rachel.

Thank you for helping think i need all the help i can get.

Re: 1851&61 census look up north yorkshire please

Looks to be your John Woodhouse even though there is another one born Ainderby Steeple, but the late 1830's. Found this on the 1861 census:-

civil parish Kirby Wisk, reg dist Thirk, sub reg dist Thirsk.

Kirby Grove

Thomas Bendelow age 13 servant born Sowerby
Elizabeth Fenwick age 16 servant born Rainton
Esther Gains age 3 neice born Borrowby
Jane Hall age 20 servant born Breckenbro
Catherine Hugh age 35 wife born Thirsk
Francis Hugh age 2 son born Kirby Wiske
Thomas Hugh age 35 head occ farmer off 118 acres born Kirby Wiske
Elizabeth Marshall age 26 servant born Kirby Wiske
Margaret Marshall age 35 born Kirby Wiske
Sarah Pierson age 14 servant born Kirby Wiske
William Rees age 32 servant born Letterson, Prembrokeshire
Joseph Spence age 18 born Thornton le Moors
Sarah Tyerman age 16 servant born Kirby Wiske
Mary Ann Walker age 54 step mother born Topcliffe
Priscilla Walker age 55 aunt born Birdforth
John Woodhouse age 28 nephew born Ainderby Steeple

Looks like the Hugh's had a few bob.

Not been able to locate John on 1841/51 census yet, theres quite a few.

Re: 1851&61 census look up north yorkshire please

he certainly did have a few bob, must have been a large house with all those servants too, so Thomas Hugh was John Woodhouse uncle, his sister (thomas Hugh) would have been Johns Mother, thats not right is it? (getting mixed up now).

Re: 1851&61 census look up north yorkshire please

I'm as confused as you now. I read it that Mary Ann Walker is stepmother to head of household which is Thomas Hugh , so John is nephew to Thomas and Catherine, is he related to Mary and Priscilla? perhaps the other members can work this out?.

Are you going to send off for Jane and Charles marriage cert and Thomas's birth cert.

Hi Lightly,

I'm really pleased that the Jane mystery has now been solved. I wish I could get to the bottom of some of mine, but thats what makes it interesting.

Re: 1851&61 census look up north yorkshire please

Hi Julie,
Found a marriage of Jane Woodhouse to William Fishburn in 1851 leeds, so the Jane Fishburn you found was not the right one on the 1851 census, can you remember if there was another Jane Fishburn she was born 1831 and would have been married to William, if the census were taken in april (not sure if they were) she married in march.

Come up with another mystery,
I ordered Martha Woodhouse birth cert, (thought i'd ordered the wrong one at first) i got it to check if her father was Thomas Woodhouse, believe it or not there is no name down for the father, the mothers name is Rachel Ann Woodhouse no maiden name, so being the miss marple that i am, i worked out that Rachel and Thomas Woodhouse where martha's grandparents, her SISTER Rachel was her MOTHER, so if you will, can you please look up the 1861&71 census, and see who Martha was livng with, she was born 1860 morton on swale.
Yet another mystery to solve, i'ts so addictive.

Thank you.
