Difficult to determine Mary Ann's death, Q1 1850 looks likely... there is a burial Jan 1850, address = North st, but the 1851 census for Jesse doesn't help

The Brisbane Courier (Qld. : 1864 - 1933) - Monday 30 September 1912 p.6
DEATHS
SMITH.-On the 27th September, 1912, at her residence, "The Bluff" Spring Bluff, Sarah Anne Smith, aged 82 years.

I can't find a burial for Sarah. I'd better look outside Brisbane.

Spring Bluff is a locality north of Toowoomba, Queensland. It is situated 15 kilometres north of the city centre via New England Highway, and is adjacent to the town of Highfields. The area is named after a railway station in the area.

Hi Guys

I have just found this site. I live in Brisbane and my wife is a Smith and a direct descendant of Jesse Hoare.

I have all the information re this family on Ancestry. I am just adding further news paper articles from Trove re Jesse's time in Clunes, Victoria.

He arrived in Melbourne with Sarah Ann Thornton on the Great Britain, Dec 1852. Listed as JH Smith. They were accompanied by daughter Mary Francis from Jesse's first marriage to Mary Ann Whitehead.

They were shopkeepers in Geelong and then in 1856 at Magpie, Ballarat, Vic.

In 1859 Jesse is listed as a store keeper at Clunes, Vic. This is from daughter Kate's birth cert.

Jesse became town clerk and surveyor. He had a falling out with council in 1868 when he was not given these paid positions after his yearly reapplication. He was picked up and placed outside the council chambers by the mayor whom he sued for assault and loss of wages.

Jesse lost this case heard at Clunes. He had asked for £40 for the assault but was offered a shilling. He took the case to Melbourne and again lost with costs awarded against him. I believe this is around the time he became a shareholder in The Oriental Gold Mining Co.

He left Vic for Brisbane in about 1873. He lived in Spring Hill and died in 1882. His is a paupers grave at Toowong and the other person listed is not a relative and I presume was buried later

Sarah and her daughters moved to Toowoomba and ran a guest house at Spring Bluff.

Son William Henry became a baker at Woodford, north of Brisbane. His son, Forbes Strachan Smith fought and was wounded in WW1. His son is my wife's father.

I have photos of Jesse at a mine site on my Ancestry tree

I will soon post the newspaper articles that I have just discovered.

Regards

Peter

Hello Peter and welcome to the Forum

Thanks for all the details. I'll add it all to my tree. I'm not a descendant. I have a remote connection via NOBLE family.

Regards,

Dave
