Nothing on Justice in 1871 yet

A tree has John A's death at 1864, there is this..
Same tree has 1902 Qld for Ellen, not validated, a couple of others have the same :)

BMD:
Deaths JQ2 1864
Matthews John Alfred
Lambeth
1d, 235

Interestingly no obvious deaths for an Alfred 1861-1881 that would fit..

what a conundrum of family... good challenge tho... the children of Alfred John & Ellen came out to Oz as well as Mother Ellen, except for son Isaac he stayed/married and died UK.

Faith Matthews b 1850 arrived Qld 1870 on “Maryborough” – 1st married 1873 George Odling Dawe (he died 1878 ) - her 2nd marriage Oct 1881 to Edward Slaughter – she died 1911 Qld. – Brisbane Courier Mail 19 June 1911
Deaths - 1911 B14226 Faith Slaughter Alfred John Matthews Ellen Wilson

Frederick Francis Matthews and Justice Matthews arrived in Qld on “Royal Dane” Oct 1871
Frederick’s death - 1931 B15191 Frederick Francis Matthews John Alfred Matthews Helen Wilson – Brisbane Courier Mail – 14 Sept 1931.

Trees say Mother Ellen/Helen Matthews nee Wilson arrived in Qld & died 1902, - Ellen remarried in Qld 1866 to Alfred Slaughter – Qld BMD has this for her death - 1902 B2221 Ellen Slaughter - Wilson Sarah Newman - (marriage 1823 St Marylebone London Sarah Newman to Isaac Wilson).

How and why did Mum Ellen pack her ports and go to Oz leaving the children behind after Alfred’s death in 1864 unless she knew Alfred Slaughter – it’s also interesting that note’s on Tree of her daughter Faith’s 2nd marriage to Edward Slaughter – Faith is daughter of father’s 3rd wife Ellen (nee Wilson) that is step-sister & brother marrying.. married at Faith’s home at Edward st according to Baptist rites.

Could Ellen have come out to Qld under her maiden name on “Sultana” 1865 on Qld Immigrants from British Isles & Germany or as Ellen Matthew age 33 from Liverpool to Brisbane 13 Oct 1863 on “Rockhampton” – Qld Passenger Lists. - Tree suggest that if she paid her way then probably no record of her arrival..

for Mother Ellen's death - The Queenslander Sat 29 March 1902
SLAUGHTER.—On the 20th March, Ellen Slaughter, relict of the late Mr. Alfred Slaughter, sen., and mother of Mrs. J. Berry, aged 77 years.

Val

Hi Val

Yeah, I assumed Dave knew details re Slaughter 'tags'.

Ellen's birth is a bit of a problem, no parents found yet, unless you've had more luck..

Not sure where Justice is in 1871, not with Isaac or Frederick.. Isaac looks to have arrived 1874..

That John Alfred death fits well for Ellen's remarriage.

Like you said a good challenge this one :)

Sorry Geoff re son Isaac, some of those Trees are a bit off course...

Isaac Matthews b 1847 arrived Qld on “Royal Dane” 4 May 1874 age 28 - married Esther Victoria Haszell March Qtr 1870 W.Ham Vol 4a page 31 – he died 1881 Balmain NSW. Buried Balmain Cemetery 1 Aug 1881

The passenger list for Royal Dane also needs to show Esther wife and a child Ellen age 3-4yrs travelling with Isaac. (1871 UK census just has baby Ellen age 8mths.)

His Marriage in UK
Name: Isaac Matthews
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Single
Marriage Date: 6 Mar 1870
Marriage Place: Holy Trinity, Canning Town, Essex, England
Father: Alfred John Matthews
Spouse: Esther Victoria Haszell

Thanks, Val... I didn't really look much into Isaac Matthews, I just noticed him on Dave's 1851 census and noticed an Issac among the 'Matthews' on the Qld 1848-1912 arrivals for 1874.

I have just picked up on these old posts, and am also interested in Ellen Slaughter's whereabouts. My present search is to try to clarify the time period when Alfred Slaughter snr returned to the Old Country, following the tragic death of his second wife, Emma (de Fraine) on the Fiery Star in April 1865 and his marriage to Ellen whom he is believed to have met on the cruise home, and their subsequent marriage on 23 November 1866 in Brisbane. As Alfred snr is my great great grandfather, and Edward his son, my great grandfather, with his first wife Sarah Eliza my great grandmother, you could say I have a vested interest in these families. I was elated when I was able to write a story about Emma Slaughter's disappearance some years ago as a result of my Trove timelining which was published in the Queensland Family History Journal. Could it be that Alfred snr and Ellen travelled on the Sultana from Liverpool in November 1865, arriving Moreton Bay in March 1866.? Anyone care to offer a scenario?
Thanks,
Mary

Deaths Jun Qtr 1864 MATTHEWS John Alfred [45] Lambeth 1d 235

Ellen would have arrived after that death. I have no arrival for her before 23 Nov 1866.

I have nothing in my tree to say Alfred returned to England after Emma's death.

Hi Dave,
My thoughts about Alfred Snr making a nostalgic visit to the Old Country were based on comments in The Slaughter Family Story - The family of Richard and Elizabeth Slaughter in Australia (1999) page 16. Justice Sarah (aka Jessie) Matthews (Berry) was reported to have commented on their meeting up. Am presently searching Trove passenger lists in the hope of finding any signposts. This Slaughter dynasty is a never-ending-story, isn't it!! Thanks, Mary

Yes, for sure Mary. Justice would have still been in England.

MATTHEWS Justice S 17 'Royal Dane' 2 Dec 1871 IMM/114 176 Z1958

I doubt Trove will list many of the passengers on the 'Sultana' as there were about 500 on board.
