Hello,

John WOOD b. abt 1860 Orkney

SP does have a birth for a John WOOD 1860 Evie, Orkney

Agnes ARROL b. 16 Jan 1862 Paisley, Renfrew

Marriage 1887 Grangemouth, Stirling

I'd like a look up please for the family in 1891.

EDIT: I am now wondering if the Agnes in this marriage is actually my Agnes. It will be interesting to see what the census says about her age and pob. :)

Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Still not sure if it's my Agnes or not but there is this death:

1923 Agnes WOOD (ARROL) Grangemouth, Stirling Age 61

Also

1912 John WOOD Grangemouth, Stirling Age 51

When I know more I'll add events to my list of 'to get' next time I purchase credits on SP.

Hello Josie,

Thank you very much.

I'll have to chase up the nephew too to find which daughter had married. I had not traced any of the children until now. It was the recent post about the marriage of an Agnes that brought me back to this branch of my tree.

Looks as though George has become John.

In 1891 George is a general labourer not a blacksmith.

There is a John but he was 22 in 1871. I have no occupation for any of the children in 1871. According to the 1861 John was born in New Monkland, Lanark abt 1848.

Please see if you can find John in 1881. Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

I've been looking for a death for John b. abt 1848 and so far can't find one that fits. This one fits:

Death 1914 John ARROLL Govan, Lanark Age 64

Hi Dave,

In 1871, the children have the following occupations.

John 22 Mill Worker
Elizabeth 17 Mill Worker
Robert 16 Mill Tenter
Janet 14 Mill Worker
James 12 Mill Worker

Haven’t yet found a definite sighting of John in 1881!

There are two John Arrolls born 1848 living in Dumbartonshire, but they are both “sons”, living with mother or parents. There is one born 1845 in Johnston, Renfrewshire, living in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire and working as an engineer.

So, not much further on!

Hello Josie,

Thanks. I'll add those occupations now.

1849 is probably a bit closer for John. Fits better with age at death, if that is him, and age in 1861. That death as ARROLL.

I may have found George - a death in 1941 in Fife is the only one born 1864 +/- 1.

I'd say that occupation had to be Iron puddler.

I can't see a death for Jean/Jane after 1891. I notice the 1891 has Paisley, Lanarkshire for Jean, Agnes and George.

Pob Polmont, Stirling 1824 for Jean and Paisley, Renfrewshire for the two children.

Death 1920 Elizabeth CHALMERS (ARROL) Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton Age 66

I can find 3x Andrew CHALMERS deaths after 1881 born 1851 +/- 1.

I now have my doubts about the marriage of Elizabeth even though it appears a brother James (Tape Dresser’s Assistant) is living with them. I took the middle name Butcher as possibly being grandmothers name which has many variations including Butcher although it's really Butchart or Butchard.

The death in Kirkintilloch seemed a bit odd until I checked for other ARROL families. There is an Elizabeth and a James born in Dunbarton who would fit that 1881 census in post #14.

What pob is shown for Elizabeth and for James in that 1881 census in post #14?

Yes, I know we have a nephew George CHALMERS but too many things don't fit:

1881
CP: Paisley High Church
Renfrew
Jane Arrol 56 Head, House Keeper born Paisley
Agnes Arrol 19 Tailoress born Parish, Shotts ?
John Arrol 17 Blacksmith born Paisley <----- George ?
George Chalmers 8 Nephew
There is no John 2 years younger than Agnes in my tree, only a George. My Agnes was born in Paisley not Shotts. Jean was born 1824 in Stirling (extracted baptism that gives full names of parents) not Paisley.

It could be my family or not. I'd say it's 50/50 at the moment. I'm checking a death for James.

Hello Josie,

Thank you very much.

Elizabeth and others born before Robert were born in Lanark.

1855 ARROL ROBERT M NEW MONKLAND LANDWARD /LANARK 651/02 0087

Page 18
1855 Births in the Landward District of New Monkland in the County of Lanark Registered by John Macarthur, Registrar
No 87 - Arrol, Robert Not Present - Male - 1855 April Fourth 11h. 30m. P.M. Petersburn - James Arrol Collier 32 years Paisley - 1843 Paisley 1 Boy & 4 Girls living - Jean Arrol Maiden Name Butchart 30 years Shotts [? Polmont] Parish Her 6th child - James Arrol Father - 1855 April 16th at New Monkland John Macarthur Registrar

Jane b. 27 May 1857 High Church Paisley, Renfrew and those born after Jane including James, Agnes & George born at Paisley also.

So I still don't know for sure if that is an error for pob for Elizabeth or if it's another ARROL family.

Re Jean and Shotts Parish - it's there as well as other places which is curious because the extracted baptism is very clearly her:

Jean BUTCHART c. 22 Aug 1824 Polmont, Stirling, Scotland
George BUTCHART & Christian HANNAH

Unless they moved between her birth and her baptism.
