Hello,

I'm having problems finding a marriage for a John BENTON to a Caroline 1838-1845 UK or Australia or ???

Probably closer to 1845 as Caroline would have been 17 in 1838. First known birth is in NSW in 1845.

I've looked in Qld., NSW and Vic. and UK in FS and FreeBMD.

IGI has this one:

John BENTON & Caroline BENGE
Marriage: 28 May 1843 St George, Gravesend, Kent

Regards,

Dave

I can't find a birth/baptism for that Caroline.

I still can't find them in shipping records if they are the parents of children born in NSW from 1845 onwards.

Hi Dave,

There is a John Benton marriage in 1843 Gravesend, Kent.

Brides listed Caroline Benge - Ann Frances Ribbens - Sarah Webster Sutherland.

Only 2 grooms listed and 3 brides. Didnt see your posting of this marriage.

Thanks Julie.

I went back to old IGI and found a match but am still stuck trying to show they are the right couple.

If they can be found in England in 1851 then they are ruled out. If they can't be found then it's back to searching shipping records.

No parents listed on the death reg for Caroline in NSW. Age at death gives birth about 1821.

Death
3248/1859 BENTON CAROLINE AGE 38 YEARS DIED GOULBURN GOULBURN

possible
6418/1891 BENTON JOHN - BARNEY - VICTORIA - GOULBURN ?

Ok, thanks Julie.

Why would they baptise six children at the same time?

One possible reason is that they baptised them after a late marriage.

I can only see this marriage in NSW

V1848492 33B/1848 BENTON JOHN - SUTTON CHARLOTTE
CT= Church of England
Black Creek, Bulwarra, Cloden, East Maitland, Hinton, Hunter District, Maitland, Morpeth, West Maitland

That is not near Goulburn.

I can't see any children to John & Charlotte.

No death in NSW for a Charlotte that fits.

If they were all born in NSW why baptise six children in 1854?

The actual dob could be correct but the pob is in doubt.

The info re John being a lock-up keeper in Goulburn then later Gundagai and arriving 1851 means most of those children baptised in 1854 could not have been born in Australia. I also means we have 2x John & Caroline but we can exclude the one in 1851 census born Essex abt 1817 and Caroline born 1825 Norfolk. The John who died in Gundagai was born about 1809 in Isle of Wight and spouse Caroline about 1821, place unknown.

The name could be BERTON in records.
