The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser (NSW : 1868 - 1931) - Tuesday 17 September 1901 p.2
DEATH OF MR. JOHN BENTON.

... The late Mr. Benton was born in the Isle of Wight, near the late Queen's Castle, on 12th March, 1809, and came to Australia in the year 1851. ...
... Of a family of eight, five are natives of London.

That must mean wife Caroline and 4 children:

George William b. 9 Nov 1845
Jessie b. 31 Dec 1846
Helen b. 16 Jul 1848
Louisa b. 1 Aug 1850

Alfred Henry b. 24 Dec 1851
John James b. 4 Jun 1854

I don't know if this is the marriage:

John Benton & Caroline Benge
28 May 1843 St. George, Gravesend, Kent, England
Father's Name: John Benton
Spouse's Father's Name: John Benge

but father on death reg is John:

Death 9571/1901 BENTON JOHN - JOHN - ELIZABETH W - GUNDAGAI ** 14 Sep 1901

Have not found any birth reg for children born in England. Have not found the family in shipping records yet.

Don't know if they are in 1851 census or not. I don't have John in 1841 yet either.

Death 3248/1859 BENTON CAROLINE AGE 38 YEARS DIED GOULBURN GOULBURN

Thanks,

Dave

Thanks Geoff.

That's a bit of a surprise. No wonder I had no luck finding birth reg under BENTON.

They baptised the first 6 children in Goulburn on 10 Sep 1854.

Very long obit here:
