Thanks Rupert.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Wednesday 18 September 1901 p.10
GUNDAGAI, Tuesday.
John Benton, 92, a resident for over 40 years, died on Saturday. Deceased, who was at one time lock-up keeper here, was born at the Isle of Wight, and came to Australia in 1851. Deceased leaves two sons and five daughters.

Still can see the arrival.

Obituary says the family arrived in 1851 but that's not possible with a birth in England on 31 Dec 1851.

John James was born on 4 June 1854 and baptised in NSW on 10 Sep 1854.

No birth reg in England or NSW for John. Probably born in NSW.

Arrival then Jan 1852 - June 1854.

The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser

Tue 17 Sep 1901

etc .. Mr. Benton first passed through Gundagai in the year of the great flood of 1852, whilst on his way to the Ballarat gold-field etc

.. Of a family of eight, five are natives of London

Alfred Henry b. 24 Dec 1851
So if Alfred was born in the UK and the great flood at Gundagai was in July 1852 so arrival between Jan 1852 and June 1852.

The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954)
Mon 5 Jul 1852
THE FLOOD AT GUNDAGAI.

ONE of the most fearful catastrophes which it has ever been our lot to record will be found reported in another column. The village of Gundagai has been almost entirely destroyed, and it is supposed that at least seventy lives have been lost.

Thanks gibbo.

Births Mar 1852 STRANGWIGE Alfred Henry Benton - Newington 1d 193 mmn -

Seems a bit odd to have waited to baptise those born in England.

John James b. 4 Jun 1854 but no reg in NSW.

Children all baptised on 10 Sep 1854.
