EDIT: That seems to be the only baptism in Cornwall 1810-1820 for a John RICE according to Cornwall OPC site database. Any census listings for a John RICE born abt 1814 Kenwyn or Truro etc... should be the one. For example:

Hello dave,

Thanks. I'll take your word for it. When I zoom in it is even harder to read.

I looked in FS in 1841 and dozens of John RICE then I looked in 1851 and zero on FS site. I know they were not ALL in the West Indies. :2fun:

After proving part of the other researchers logic was totally wrong with Samuel born in Leeds, I decided to assume nothing (mainly not assume John Married Charlotte Mary REYNOLDS although he may have) and start with what I know.

the first entry says - on board HMS Racehorse. there is one name under this then the 3rd line says on board HMS Active, then John Rice and 4 others, then another ships name.

HMS Active (1799) was a 38-gun fifth rate launched in 1799. She was placed on harbour service in 1826, renamed HMS Argo in 1833 and was broken up in 1860.

Has to be this one not that it helps us much:

HMS Active (1845) was a 36-gun fifth rate launched in 1845, becoming a training ship and being renamed HMS Tyne in 1867 and HMS Durham in 1867. She was sold in 1908.

No problem Woody. HMS Active ( :2fun: ) had been in Ordinary (ie. Reserve) and had never been to sea until it was towed to a new destination in 1863.

You are probably right that he's the only John Rice but online parish clerk transcriptions are done by volunteers who choose parishes of interest to them personally before working through other parishes so there are undoubtedly other parish registers not yet transcribed and in no particular order e.g. area or alphabetical to how/when they appear.
That's how we do it on the Lancs one and I think most follow the same way.
Always worth checking back for additions.

Hello Woody,

You are perfectly right in saying the OPC's do the parishes in order of interest. Looking in 1841 census for Cornwall for all John RICE I can find 6 and none born anywhere near 1814. It's not that common a name there.

In IGI looking for John RICE b. 1814 +/- 20 years there is only the one. I've not checked what IGI batches of Cornwall are covered.

I'm stuck with this one so I think it's time I moved on to another branch of my tree.

Time to take this 'thing' off so I'll be back tomorrow with a new query.

Hello Woody,

If the census is correct and John was born in Middlesex then there are about 10 possible (some with middle names) but none that I can see baptised at St Katherine cree.

What is the connection to the middle names?
