The title page refers to to HMS Wellesley and it seems all the details for that vessel have been copied on A... for all other vessels.

So, what should I put as the census details for John?

Looking at the images the title page does say

Enumeration Book for thr Royal Navy
Name of Ship Wellesley

However as you go through each page various ships are mentioned. I'm not very well up on Naval etiquette etc but it may well be that the Wellesley was the highest ranking ship or carried the highest ranking officer and all the others were just part of the fleet.

I'd put him down as being on board the Active.

If it helps fmp gives the County as - British ships in home ports

and the Country as Ships and Overseas Establishments.

I presume all the ships listed under that ED are all part of the same fleet at the same location.

But it seems odd with Anglesey/Holyhead and Medway/Chatham ??

I'd say the Wellesley carried the highest ranking officer.

I have a few in my tree who were in RN and should be on a few census records. I'll see if I can remember some of them.

The title page states 'Moored in the River Medway at Chatham' so I would think that each ship listed is in the Medway at Chatham.

HMS Active (1845) was a 36-gun fifth rate launched in 1845, becoming a training ship and being renamed HMS Tyne in 1867 and HMS Durham in 1867. She was sold in 1908.
