I'm trying to find a puzzle in my Cook family.

I have proof that John Cook and James Cook (and other siblings) were the children of Daniel Cook and Sally Philps (Phelps) and were born in Petersfield, Hants, John - 31 Dec 1843) and Sheet, Hants, (James - 30 Mar 1845).

James is fine, he is a direct line descendant.

All I have about John is an 1871 Census thus
Household Role Gender Age Birthplace
John Cook Self M 28 Petersfield, Hants
Elizabeth A Cook Wife F 26 Langton, Dorsetshire
Elizabeth A Cook Daughter F 6 Langton, Dorsetshire
John J Cook Son M 4 Brighton, Surrey
William Cook Son M 2 Swanage, Dorsetshire
Frank Cook Son M 0 Swanage, Dorsetshire

We caught up with a John Cook in Australia, and his son Frank. When Frank died in West Perth, West Australia on 9 January 1912, his funeral notice shows that my grandfather James Burgess and some of his siblings attended the funeral. It got me thinking, other than the 1871 Census, how can we find out Johns wifes name (Elizabeth Ann ????). I can't seem to find a marriage anywhere.

Frank by the way is 1st cousin of James Burgess (my grandfather) - James Burgess having married Eveline Cook, daughter of James Cook mentioned above.

I did have this in my notes, but carelessly didn't write down where I found the information, so I know they came to Australia.

Arrival South Australia in 1881 "Star of India" Left 22nd Feb 1880 from Plymouth, arrived 31 Dec 1880
Cook 1881 John 36 yrs, married
Cook 1881 Elizabeth A...81/1 (X2) 36 yrs married
Cook 1881 Frank ..........81/1 9yrs
Cook 1881 William ........81/1 2 yrs
Cook 1881 John ............81/1

Can you help me find the marriage of John Cook and Elizabeth Ann please?

I did think it was Elizabeth Ann Hatchard, but I need something to prove it.

I did find a christening for an Elizabeth Ann Hatchard
Name: Elizabeth Ann Hatchard
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 23 Jun 1844
Christening Place: LANGTON MATRAVERS, DORSET, ENGLAND
Father's Name: James Hatchard
Mother's Name: Ann

Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C01261-2 , System Origin: England-ODM , GS Film number: 1239203

But the marriage I need to confirm everything.

Yes I do, but I am not convinced we have the right Elizabeth Ann - and the John apparently comes from Manchester.

IN MEMORIAM
COOK - In loving remembrance of my dear husband, John Cook, of Balaklava, (South Australiaand the dearly beloved father of Mrs William Williams, of Belalie East, who departed this life on the 18th of February 1886, aged 43 years.

All I can vouch for is that Frank (Johns son) was related to my grandmother Evelyn Cook, hence the Burgess famly attending the funeral in Perth (where Frank died)

and
COOK, Elizabeth Ann, age 57, bur. 05/11/1899, Plot: AS12, Jamestown Cemetery, Jamestown, Northern Areas, South Australia

The Advertiser, Adelaide, 10 Nov 1899
DEATHS
COOK - On the 6th November, at Jamestown, Mrs E A Cook, widow of the late John Cook, Balaklava, South Australia and beloved mother of Mrs Wm Williams, Belalie East, Wm Cook, Hawker, and Frank Cook, North Fremantle, WA, aged 55 years.

I really just want to confirm we have the right Elizabeth Ann - as she's not a direct relative, I haven't bothered with a death cert. Just have to find the marriage. We do know for sure that John Cook is related, and he is descended from Daniel & Sally Cook

With John Cook and Elizabeth Ann been common names it might be hard to find the marriage without a maiden name for Elizabeth.
Im not even sure what the SA certificates have on them, might not even have her maiden name. It was just a thought.

Very true.

Somewhere along the line I thought her name was Hatchard
Baptism in Langton Matravers
23 Jun 1844 Elizabeth Ann HATCHARD d James Ann

and
Name: Elizabeth Ann Hatchard
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 23 Jun 1844
Christening Place: LANGTON MATRAVERS, DORSET, ENGLAND
Father's Name: James Hatchard
Mother's Name: Ann

Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C01261-2 , System Origin: England-ODM , GS Film number: 1239203

Of the 4 childrenthey had, their daughter also Elizabeth Ann named their 4th child Frank Blyth Hatchard Williams (the daughter having marfried a William Williams - but none of this proves Elizabeth Ann Hatchard was the wife of John Cook

Yes I am p robably worrying about nothing, but its so easy to assume a name as one of yours, - but you still need the proof.
I know the 4 kids are definitely his, but which Elizabeth Abnn I dont know.
And we know for sure they came to Adelaide. (tho Frank went to Perth, as did my grandfather and grandmother, from Adelaide)

Ok, will have another look. I did look when it was first posted. I seem to remember the birth with the Hatchard middle name went some way to helping..

Yes, we have found everything relating to Elizabeth Ann Hatchard and her family - but we really have no proof that she is our Elizabeth Ann or not. I don't want to just assume she is.

Found my notes, had checked:

Anc., FS/IG, FMP, FreeREG and FreeBMD and nothing came up.

The closest on the BMD was this with an Elizabeth, but surely she would have been to young to be a widow

It is possible that John is in Q1 1864, because it is the end of the year and possibly a page end there may have been some confusion ;)

Dave Lambert or Dave Ham may be able to help, not my forte this I'm afraid.

So she must be the one surely. Wonder why Portsea tho, and not Hampshire or Dorset.

Is Portsea the place where people run a way to get married lol - Is it anywhere near Dorset?

Yeah, more usual to get married in the bride's parish, though only about 30 miles or so as the crow flies..
