John was epileptic

The Courier (Brisbane, Qld. : 1861 - 1864)(about)
Wednesday 3 September 1862

SUDDEN DEATH.-On Friday morning last, Mr. John Downs, of Ellenborough street, died rather suddenly from the effects of a series of epileptic fits. The deceased retired to rest on Thursday evening, lo his usual state of health, having spent a part of the evening in playing on the violin. He got up about 1 o'clock on Friday morning, to see if there was any prospect of rain, and then returned to bed, and slept until about 4 o'clock, when he bad a slight fit, from which he recovered under the attention of his wife and family ; he had another about 6 o'clock, and from that time until 8 o'clock suffering from a repetition of the attacks. He then commenced to complain of pain ia the bowels, and suffered from purging. Dr. Rowlands was sent for, who expressed an opinion that the patient would not recover. The unfortunate man died at about 11 ; o'clock, leaving a wife and seven children to lament his loss. The ages of the children ? are from two to fourteen years.-Ibid

Thanks gibbo. :) That tree is correct. Wrong mother's name on death reg (BAKER):

John DOWN c. 2 Mar 1823 Westwell, Kent, England
George DOWN & Sarah Ann CACKETT

DOWN John, Naomi nee SLAUGHTER arrived in SA 1846-05-14 aboard Isabella Watson from London [Source:4,6,7]

If they moved to Qld. in 1849 then George 1847 and Thomas 1849 must have been born in SA.

Qld births:
1857/C0788 Unnamed (M) - John - Naomi Slaughter
1857/C0789 Alfred - John - Naomi Slaughter
1858/C1264 Amelia - John - Naomi Slaughter
1862/C0637 John Ebenezer - John - Naomi Slaughter

So children William, Edwin and Sally are unaccounted for. Either not registered in Qld. or they left SA closer to 1856.

Thanks Joan. :)

So that seems to say they took a very lone time to get to Qld. or they took a long time once they arrived before they decided to register births.

The number of unusual deaths in my tree are adding up.

I suppose I have a bit of everything - shooting, drowning, hanging, burning, run down, boiler explosions, dragged into cog-wheels of steam engine, plane crashes, KIA (various)...

I can't find anything else here yet, but Sarah Ann would have been over 60 when she married??
She's not registered in SA
Thanks Joan. Looks like only the two in the bio with dates born in SA.

The last would be about 1862 but born before 1858 if in fact the eldest daughter.
