I am looking for a John Durant Cumming born 1818 and disappeared after his wife's death circa 1862. He must have died but cannot find any trace of him and have been looking for over ten years.
Last night I found this website and noted someone is looking for information on William Carter of Hay and wife Maria Finlay. I found Maria on an English census last night and have names of over 700 descendants of Edwin Carter and Mary Ann Stockdale. Would be very happy to pass on this information. No one is our family is interested in FH so if I can help others - be my guest.

Name: John Durant CUMMING
***: M
Birth: 12 OCT 1819 in Hamberstone Street, London
Death: BET JAN AND MAR 1896 in Kent

Father: William CUMMING b: NOV 1779 in Ashburton, Devon
Mother: Elizabeth DURANT b: 1782 in Exeter, Devon

Marriage 1 Maria Sarah Hopkins HOOPER b: BEF 7 MAY 1821
Married: 4 NOV 1845 in St Leonards, Exeter, Devon

If that assumption is correct:

Deaths Mar 1896
Cumming John 77 Dartford 2a 300

but death could have been in December 1895 and registered in January.

May or may not be the right death but needs further work. Such as reading the previous post.

Deceased by 19 April 1888. I'd say someone has used age at death to choose that one.

Hi Dave,
Thank you for all that information. You certainly found all that quickly! I have all of it apart from his birth which I thought was in 1818 in Devon but no proof. Thank you!! Where di you find the record of his birth please?
I will check on those deaths again but we (cousin in UK) have purchased most of them without finding any actual proof that it was the right person as none had the second name of Durant.

Hello Anne,

Was just a quick search. The birth will have to be checked. The death is wrong so the birth on that tree could also be.

Not sure we will find John's death but I'm sure several members here will try to find it. Some other details may be found along the way.

Hi Dave,
Oh, my gosh. This has all been so over-whelming, I doubt I am going to sleep tonight I am having trouble finding my way around the website but it all adds to the excitement of the chase.
My husband is asleep so cannot tell him about your connection to the Gribble family but thank you from him also.
Regards, Anne

Thanks Julie.

I don't know yet if there might be any marriages prior to the one I found that would push the date back a bit more.

Elizabeth died 18 July 1864 son Richard Durant Cumming the sole executor. Effects under £3,000. I wonder if her will mentions John. Wonder whether John died while travelling abroad, well just a thought. :)

Possibly Julie. One site I came across suggested he might have gone to Ireland.

No record using middle name in Irish Civil Registration deaths on FS.

Thank you for all that hard work.
I don't know if that is the correct date of birth because there have been errors in that website before. The parents names are correct but there is no Durant in the name. Again, I have my doubts about the date of John's death.

I have since found out that letters written to him in mid 1860s and addressed to Ipswich, Queensland were held at the Queensland Archives for some time before being destroyed. Did he really come to Australia? I don't know and will have to check shipping records which isn't much good if he paid his own way. As this search has been going on for about 20 years, I will keep looking. The answer must be somewhere and as you say, "someone always knows something."
Thank you again, I appreciate your efforts and all the time spent on him. Research is fun but so frustrating.
