I have Johnatho(a)n Williams b. c1791 and his wife Elizabeth b. c1792 living in Salford in 1841 census.

Could someone come up with a marriage or maiden name for Elizabeth.
The family in 1841 are:-

Margaret. aged 20
John. aged 15
James. aged 15
Alexander. aged 10

Reg. dist. Salford, Lancs.
Sub.reg. Greengate.

Elizabeth may have been born in Halifax, Lancs, and her birth year is assumed to be 1792, taken from census.

Thank you so much.

Hi Steve

A Johnathan Williams married Elizabeth Hodgson at St Maurice, York City in 1809 according to the IGI and another Johnathan William married an Elizabeth Tessyman in 1822 in Bedale, Yorkshire. Do any of these place names help?

Have you found Johnathan on later censuses?

Ben

Hi Ben,
I have them in 1851 & 1861 living in Salford, Manchester.

Had a job at first as Jonathons name was transcribed as Iown:confused:
It was abbreviated, and then transcribed wrongly.

Bedale and York seem a bit far away fro 2 Lancashire people. But knowing my rellies, anythings possible.
But I would think a bit closer to home, and Lancashire would be more in order. There was still a bit of rivalry between 'the roses', even then.

Hi Steve

Ben may be on the right track.
1851 & 1861 census Elizabeth WILLIAMS is listed as being born in Halifax, Yorkshire (not Lancashire).

Their daughter Margaret in 1841 census born c1821, do you have her in the 1851 census to check where she was born.

Just a thought
cheers

Hi Ben and CP,
I must of had one of those senior moments. Elizabeth was born in Halifax, Yorkshire according to 1851/61 census.
I took her birthpace from the 1841 census. Doh.

Hi Steve

Luckily, Johnathan isn't such a common first name in the 19th century unlike his surname. I think Bedale is further north but the 1809 marriage looks likely.
