Hi

Looking for John's birth/bap.

Parents not known. He is with wife Ann and dau. Mary Ann in 1861, living next door to in-laws [James and Mary Rankin]. 1861 and subsequent censuses all say b. Soham, Cambridgeshire. 1881 has him b. 1833

A little more info HERE

Many thanks
Geoff

Hi,

There is a John Haylock, parents William and Mary Ann, baptised 18/5/1833 in Ely. Soham is about five miles away from Ely so he could have lived in Soham but been baptised in Ely.

The 1905 death could well be the John born 1833. The info given to the registrar is only as good as the knowledge of the person who gave it and may not be exact.

Thanks Em'

Yeah, this one is a bit of a poser, especially mother being a 'Mary Ann' However, I think this is the one who is a bricklayer/builder and ended up in Middlesex... [2nd thoughts after Amanda's find]. My John stayed in the Newmarket RD and was an Ag lab.

Thanks Amanda

I think that is the one who ended up in Middlesex as a Builder, he married an Elizabeth and is still around in 1911.

Though, if he proves to be the bricklayer I found in 1851, that means there are 3x John Haylocks' b. abt the same time.

Em's point "The info given to the registrar is only as good as the knowledge of the person who gave it and may not be exact". Is very relevant, especially in this case, John's marriage and the reg. of their 2 dau's have yet to be found/confirmed

I wasn't aware of one b. in 1831 or that was his death, thanks for that.

I don't have my John's death at present.

Since there are no obvious births in Soham there are 3 possibles in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, the one b. Balsham had moved out of the area by 1851, leaving 2, one was a bricklayer in 1851, b. 1834 Ely [already discussed] and in 1851 one b. 1833, an Ag lab.

At the moment I am leaning towards the 1833 b. Ely, since there's nothing else that fits'.

Census ref. 1851 HO107; Piece: 1765; Folio: 266; Page: 31.

1841 ref: HO107; Piece: 88; Book: 5; Folio: 6; Page: 6 [He's with mother Elizabeth and sister Mary]

A baptism would be good :)

Geoff

Edit: Those DoB's are taken from the census and don't necessarily reflect those DoB's found in posts 2 & 3.

Just to recap, the one in Balsham was John Julius father gent, so as you have discounted this and the others the only one left and looks like it fits is:

First Name JOHN
Last Name HAYLOCK
Year Of Birth 1835
Baptism year 1835
Baptism date 24 May 1835
Abode -
Place ELY, ST MARY
Mother's Given Name Elizabeth
Father's First Name Robert
Father occupation lab
Notes -
County Cambridgeshire
Record set Cambridgeshire Baptisms
Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records
Record collection Births & baptisms
Collections from Great Britain

Doesn't give the age so he may have been a toddler when he was baptised, hope this helps.

Thanks Amanda

So we need a marriage for a Robert Haylock and an Elizabeth by 1833/35 and a death for Robert before 1841. I'll have a look at that later.

This may be Elizabeth's baptism, it was the nearest I could get to Ely or Soham, Meldreth is just outside Newmarket:

First Name ELIZABETH

Baptism year 1805
Baptism date 12 Apr 1805
Abode -

Hope it's ok

Thanks, Amanda.

A lot to take in there

I thought Elizabeth was a widow in 1841, remembering you don't usually see that info in 1841, just rechecked... at first glance it looked like widow in the profession column with 3 lines through it. Not so sure now, so Robert may be around elsewhere

There is a baptism for a Robert Haylock on the familysearch site

Robert Haylock baptised Ely 1812 parents Daniel and Sarah

There is also a burial in Ely which states Robert Haylock birth 1812 burial 1833

Could this be your Robert?

Have you noticed that John and Mary Ann were baptised together - twins or just killing two birds with one stone, so to speak.

Emeltee
No, I hadn't noticed that yet, thanks, EM.. Still reluctant to update my tree at mo., though it is progressing now. I've only looked at this branch once; a while ago  So I thought its was time to try again. Thanks again, ladies.
