Well, it will keep you out of mischief!

Can't find a William Haylock/Harlock in any of the Censuses. Certainly not one who is a shoemaker, anyway. The ones I can find all seem to be married with families and working as Ag Labs, so unless he was leading a double life he's not to be found. Unless someone knows better, of course.

The Haylock Barnard whom Ellie found in the 1841 Census piqued my interest so I had a dig around. Haylock is 4 in 1841 therefore born c1837. Robert Barnard and Rebecca Haylock married in Great Bradley, Suffolk 12 Feb 1841, some 4 years after his birth. Robert died in 1848 and in 1851 Rebecca and son Robert, also born 1837, are in Great Yarmouth visiting a John Mainprice and family. Some time bin the 1850s Rebecca is in London because in 1861 she is back in Great Yarmouth with a 4 year old daughter Clara born Pentonville (who doesn't appear on the GRO site). From then on until her death in 1896 she is back in Soham with Clara. Clara dies in Ely in 1942. Robert/Haylock is not seen again after 1851.
Rebecca Haylock was born 1816 in Cowlinge Suffolk, daughter of John Haylock and wife Martha.

Don't know if the Haylocks in Suffolk are linked in anyway to William, but it kept me quiet for a while following them through.

Following on from Ellie's find of a baptism for a John Harlock I have found the following

1841
HO107/73/16/F10

Hall Street, Soham
Sarah Harlock 30 Laundrss
Sarah Harlock 11
John Harlock 8
All born in county

1851
HO107/1763/F237/p13
50 Hall Street, Soham
Sarah Harlock Head 40 Married Sausage Maker Soham
John Ginn son 17 Ag Lab Soham
(I think the surname is an error by the Enumerator as the Head of House for No. 51 is also John Ginn)

1861
RG09/1036/F5/p5
Hall Street, Soham
Sarah Haylock Head 49 Married Laundress Soham

1871
RG10/1601/F8/p9
Pratt Street, Soham
Sarah Haylock Head 58 Widow Laundress, Soham

I can't find her after the 1871 Census but neither can I see a death which fits either.

Emeltee
Thanks, Em'...

Yep, this has to be one of the front runners, also found by another researcher in another place... Ellie also noted the bap. father = cordwainer..

The name, Harlock consistent in bap., 1841 and 1851 is a concern, my John is Haylock consistently from 1861

Would agree that Ginn could be an error..

Geoff

EDIT: Just noticed Sarah in 1861/71 calling herself Haylock?

The William Feast Haylock who married Sarah Frost had a daughter Mary in 1838. I found the family in Ely in 1841 - no son John and William is an Ag Lab so that family can be discounted.

Just to add to Ellie's find

Bapt. 2 Aug 1829 Soham Sarah daughter of William (Cordwaine) and Sarah

I wonder what happened to Elizabeth as she isn't with the family I found in 1841.

As said in previous post, this family looking very strong... I'll summarise later and see how it sits with other factors against the tree... [I don't relish that]

So they possibly had just 3 offspring Sarah Anne 1829, Elizabeth 1831 and John 1832, father = cordwainer [Harlock]. Sadly no images to check those bap's. Can't see any more after John

Married in Ely, offspring all b. Soham... Fits for John from 1861, just the name Harlock, changing to Haylock from 1861, though if them, married as Haylock

The 1841 in post #20 fits for that family minus father William and dau., Elizabeth...

Not sure about 1851, mother Sarah is a laundress in 1841 & 1861 and a sausage maker in 1851 with a son John Ginn [possibly wrongly transcribed]

So possible that father, William died or left 1832-1841..

NBI has Soham independent Chapel 1830-1834 and Soham St Andrew 1801-1837 so there are gaps..

CFHS has this burial for Soham in that period
Deceased HAYLOCK William
- Age 83
- Address otp
Burial Date 16-Dec- 1838

Also this..
Deaths Q4 1838
Harlock William
Newmarket
14 65
[Soham in Newmarket RD]

Geoff

EDIT: GRO has 84y for 1838 death..

yes down as being born 1755/6 ,I dismissed it as marriage says William was a Bach, and well past his prime for having children.

I would think William marrying in Ely ,and wrong spelling of the name in Soham, that the Haylocks came from elsewhere .
Thanks, Ellie..

Wouldn't disagree... John says he comes from Soham, his parents may well be from elsewhere. He says his father was William and a shoemaker. He married in 1857, that's all I really have on him, anything else is conjecture.. I don't even have his death confirmed, I have him and Ann in 1901 in Soham and nothing definite after then..
