Thanks all for the warm welcome.

Here's my starter for 10!

John James Gough b1865 in Coventry; married to Catherine Mary West b 1867in Hampshire & married in 1890 in Coventry. I am trying to locate details of him on the 1911 Census but without success. I know at the time that he had at least one child, John Clancy Gough b 1897 in Coventry but I am led to believe that he may have had more children prior to 1911. I have tried every combination of names etc but still am unable to come up with any info.
Can anyone help on this please.

Hi Joaning

That's brilliant & all the way from Australia. Can't thank you enough. That's certainly put the 'cat amongst the pigeons' as there are names there that I wasn't aware of. I'm struggling to view the death list but will keep trying.

Thanks again

Eric

Hi Claudie10

Thanks for getting in touch.
John James Gough is my 1st cousin 3 x removed. His father is John Gough, my 2nd Great Grand Uncle. John Gough is the brother of William Gough who is my 2nd Great Grandfather.
If you what any further info please let me know, I do have quite a bit of info on the John James Gough side of the family. I live in Birmingham, originally from Leamington, and most of my family originate from Coventry and the surrounding area.

Regards
Eric Gough

Thank you for the welcome David!

Hi Eric
Glad you got in touch. I've also got a lot of information for this family.
I have a copy of William Gough's apprenticeship record when he became a printer. I have also got info on his education if you are interested.
Maybe we could trade info?

Also, are you the same person who is looking for info on the Great War forum about my great uncle who died in WW1?

Which child of William are you descended from?

Thanks in advance,

Claudie10

Hi Claudie

I presume that the Great Uncle you are referring to is William John Gough? If so I have some of his service record but do you know what he was doing when he was in Portsmouth in 1911?
If John James Gough was your Great Grandfather who was/is your Grandfather and Father?

My father is William Richard Gough
Grandfather Hubert Henry Gough
Great Grandfather Walter Gough
Great Great Grandfather William Gough (1832) who finished his working life as a bookbinder.

Hi
Yes that's the great uncle I'm referring to. I've had his service records for a long time. I also have a copy of the court martial from the sinking of the ship he was on. This is research I did at the National Archives a few years ago.
I shall have to dig my file out but from memory William was an officer's steward which I think meant he was like their servant. The torpedo hit the officer's mess and killed the five officers and William. Everyone else managed to escape.
It's sad that his parents probably never knew what had happened to him. I have his will and details of the compensation they received which carried on periodically for a few years after the war. I also have a copy of a photo of him in his uniform.
The family lived in Portsmouth for a few years but moved back to Coventry around 1912. They had previously lived in Milford Derbyshire and Derby itself.

My grandfather was George Gough and my dad, his son John.

Hi Claudie10

Sounds all very interesting. The Gough's are certainly a large family and I have to admit that I hadn't done a lot of research on what is your side of the family. I take it that your Grandfather is George Arthur Gough born 1900 d 1983? I have no info on his marriage and would therefore not have any knowledge of your father etc (sorry). Perhaps you could enlighten me on that score.........your Grandfathers marriage date and to whom and also that of your father etc.
You have obviously done a lot of work on John James Gough and I would certainly be interested in the info you have but it would be unfair of me to ask for that when at the moment I am probably unable to pass anything on to you (hopefully you know what I mean!) Sadly during the last six months of his life my Grandfather cleared out all photos, paperwork etc so the family have no records or photos that we can refer to.
Keep in touch and I'll send you a private message with my details etc.
