Hello Barbara,

Thanks. The family was living in Milton in 1871 and occupation fits.

I have the birth as 30 Nov 1863 Milton for the one in my tree.

I have this marriage in NSW which seems a bit late:

1458/1916 McFARLANE JOHN - LANGLEY BRIDGET - ST PETERS

A death reg with parents who fit and age at death that also fits. But, as you say, a common name and even with matching parents it could be that the John in NSW is not mine and the one who stayed in Scotland is.

I have some of the family in shipping records arriving in 1885. I also have another one, James, who didn't arrive with the rest but did later. So it's possible others including John also came out after 1885.

Do I know? Not yet :D

Regards,

Dave

I can't see a notice in the newspapers for the 1916 marriage.

If it's a 2nd marriage for John then children don't fit:

Death 29633/1942 McFARLANE JOHN - WILLIAM - AGNES - RANDWICK

The Sydney Morning Herald - Thursday 19 November 1942 p.8
DEATHS
McFARLANE.-November 18, 1942, at Prince of Wales Hospital Randwick, John McFarlane, beloved husband of Bridget, and dear grandfather of Doris, Mary, and Jack, aged 78 years. At rest.

Death 15726/1944 McFARLANE BRIDGET - JOHN - CATHERINE JANE - CANTERBURY

The Sydney Morning Herald - Tuesday 1 August 1944 p.10
DEATHS
McFARLANE.-July 31, 1944, at her grand-daughter's residence, 104 First Avenue, Campsie, Bridget, relict of the late John McFarlane, and loved mother of Amelia, Florrie, Blanche, and Frederick Langley, aged 84 years.

Marries in 1916 and dies in 1942 with 3 grandchildren ???

I can't find the births or the marriages for any of the children or grandchildren named in the two notices.

Perhaps Bridget married twice and the children are from her first. Frederick has the middle name so perhaps that is Bridget's maiden name.

I'm stuck. I don't even know the family name of Doris, Mary & Jack.

One of the grandchildren is old enough to have their own residence. Without a name the address does not help.

I need something that proves John, the spouse of Bridget, was not born in Milton, Lanark.

Only thing I can think of is killing that John off in Scotland if you know his mother's maiden name.

Let me know if I can do anything.
