Any help would be appreciated.

And this death for his father.

Just cannot a hint of a marriage for John McKay/Scally to a Caroline Clark/e. McKay/Scally......no matter what variation of the surnames used. Or why it was that Scully wasn't used instead of McKay.

I think this is a bit of a brickwall.

I can't see this marriage in Irish genealogy, nor anywhere esle. The dates are wrong for death for John McKay/Scally.

Is this from an online family tree.

I think I may have my wires crossed somehow. John McKay was a Labourer on Dennis McKay/Scally death cert. But a Journeyman Mason on his marraige cert.
I have only for certain that Dennis appears in the 1911 & 1921 Census. The 1901 census Dennis surname is spealt Mackie, if indeed that's him. The head house is a Michael Scally.

Thanks. Steve.:)

There is also a chance that I have more than likely have the wrong death for John MacKay/Scally in Shotts, Lanark. Wifes maiden is given as Clarke.

He may not even have died there. I can find no evidence that he even came to Scotland.

No sign of their son Denis/Dennis b1879 with them in 1881 nor 1891. I did have these census, but dismissed them, only for the fact that Denis was nowhere to seen until 1901 Scots Census. Living in Liberton, Midlothian, Scotland.

Thanks MLT.(y)

Dennis McKay married Elizabeth Gwynne 1901 Portobello, Midlothian SP Ref 685/6/39

Elizabeth Gwynne born 1877 Liberton to William Gwynne and Agnes Hunter who married 1870 in New Monkland.

I appreciate that this does nothing to sort the Scally/McKay conundrum. I have come across similar name changes which have been brought about by legacy whereby the person can inherit providing the surname is changed. This is sometimes because of a family feud.

I have just emailed you a copy of the McKay/Gwynne marriage and just realised that it gives his father as John McKay and mother as Catherine Scally and not the other way round as per post#1.

Perhaps Dennis was illegitimate and only took on the McKay name when Catherine and John married?

What is your link to the McKay/Scally family. Perhaps it needs checking back again to make sure you are looking at the correct family.
The link is, my wifes Scottish rellies. Totally seperate tree from mine.

I was doing it a few years ago, but got too expensive with purchases from ScotlandsPeople. So now I have thrown some money at it in the last few weeks.

So far I have done reasonbly well. I have the ScotsPeople records that you have found. And a few transcripts from Ancestry, which hardly tell as many details as ScotsPeople do.
